Default ...um...gerbils...

It's a long story.

Once upon a time I was doing my normal thing at the pet shop. Wheels, bedding. The usual. And I saw a little gerbil and her friend, labeled as a small rat. I fell in love and long story short I have gerbils now.

They're both girls, and there were others in the tank yesterday so I'm prepared for pregnancies.

Any good gerbil articles I need to read (links) or general advice would be appreciated. And name suggestions would also be nice! I've named the little honey one HoneyComb, or Honey for short.

Thank you! I love the name Sugar, but I've had a rabbit named that:/.

Here you go Colby: Guide To Gerbils As Pets

I love gerbils. Just keep them away from bars as they can chew at bars and pull their teeth. Stick to paper and cardboard. Toilet roll tubes are a must! They chew them to bits! Two females together can turn volatile, so keep an eye on their behaviour. Hopefully they won`t be pregnant but if they were running with any males, there is a chance. Pets stores are not e best places to reply on.

A wheel is not necessary for gerbils, they refer to dig. Never give them plastic accessories due to them being avid chewers. Ripped up toilet paper and hay for nesting will go down well. x

Thank you so much! Yep, gave them a cardboard tube and now it's in shreds...lol.

How about Milk as a name for the white one? Then they could be Milk & Honey!

Just to echo what's already been said, avoid plastic. Not only are they epic chewers but they can suffer impaction if they swallow it. Fish tanks make excellent gerbil homes because they love to dig and you can give them nice deep substrate in a tank, plus they won't be able to kick it out! Make sure you have a good sturdy lid on it or a topper, they can jump

If one of them is pregnant, you shouldn't need to worry about removing her partner. Other females will usually help with the pups

I love the names Milk and Honey! It's also a very good idea to have a tank topper for these guys. I've never had a gerbil escape a tank with a topper. I also bought extra shelves so they had more floor space. I posted a bunch of photos of one crew, Cinnamon and the 3 Mouseketeers; Ash, Soot & Ghost.
