My mother's poor dog. :(
It was late Friday evening, when the foster dog attacked my mothers poor Puggle, Annie Belle. It was unprovoked. Annie was barking at something, most likely a possum, and the foster dog, who've we been calling Mamma because she had 13 puppies under our care that have all since been adopted out (she came to us already pregnant and gave birth and was an exceptional mother), came over and attacked her, completely unprovoked. My mom was alone at the time and it was all she could do to get Momma off of Annie.
Anyways, it was late and we were all tired, so we went to bed. The next morning, Annie's wounds looked worse, so we took her to our regular vet, who happened to be closed early, so we wound up at the emergency vet. There, the took her for the afternoon, put her under anesthetic and cleaned up her wounds, putting in drainage tubes. She was then bandaged up (in hot pink bandage) and sent back home.
It was lucky that she was already on an antibiotic for a UTI, and we had some pain medicine for dogs on hand (one of the puppies, the last one to go, had aggravated his ACL and was prescribed some pain medicine for it, and was around Annie's size at the time). So she is on those two to help with pain and any possible infection that might crop up.
That was Saturday, and yesterday, Sunday, we brought her back to the emergency vet for a bandage change (this time purple with hearts made from more hot pink bandaging), and given more pain medicine (two doses) as she could hardly lay down after the operation.
Today, she is doing much better, and is done with the extra pain medicine. She is resting, even wagging her tail now, and has been a complete sweetheart through this whole unfortunate series of events.
Momma is going to go to another home, or at least somewhere else. She just can't be trusted anymore. Mom is also going to write the vet bills for the operation and the extra pain medicine off as a foster expense, as it WAS the foster who caused it.

Poor Annie. I'm glad she's already starting to feel better now.

Re: My mother's poor dog. :(
Sorry to hear you had this happen but foster or rescue dogs with unknown history can be very unpredictable and dog attacks on other dogs can prove fatal. It`s lucky that this wasn`t the case. The signs can be there but humans don`t always pick up on them and attacks can just come out of the blue sadly. Glad you little dog is recovering well and doesn`t suffer any mental scars as a result. I would be very wary though of introducing dogs with unknown backgrounds into your home without real consideration or keeping him/her totally separated from the living quarters?
There have been a few major dog attack incidents here in the UK recently with fatal consequences and even though humans are to blame most of the time for dog attacks or not predicting attacks, the dog usually ends up destroyed because it just can`t be trusted with other dogs or children. I don`t personally believe all dogs like this are bad and can`t be rehabilitated with the right home, but it can be a liability for anyone to take on without knowing how to handle such behaviour.
