Default Is Caramel ready? Please Help.

My medium lop Caramel is about 8 years old. I say about because I adopted him 6 years ago.
Last April, his brother Toffee died of kidney failure. Caramel took it very well actually but in August last year, he had a mini stroke. The vet said he may or may not get better but he did get better! My little man pulled through. In August this year, we noticed he had a runny eye so we rushed down the vets again and we were given drops. Whilst the vet checked him over, he also found a lump in his abdominal area and told us Caramel had a kidney problem, like Toffee. He then said he didn't think he had long left. He gave him a steroid jab to boost him up but couldn't guarantee the length of time it would be effective.
His eye never really cleared up for good even when we continued the drops for 5 days as recommended. But he did perk up. Today, we noticed 4 things: 1) his eye was considerably worse. On getting him out to wash it, we also noticed 2) runny poo on his foot and stomach. We washed it off and let him run round the garden to calm him down and dry it slightly, then we noticed 3) he was hopping funny. Like he was really kicking his feet up in the air. It was a very weird hop, he never normally does that. Then 4) when he hopped back into his hutch - slightly awkwardly - and lay down chilled out. He never lays down like that.. EVER.
His poo, aside from slightly runny on his stomach (which I think is just down to him lying in it), is normal on his sawdust. He is eating and drinking happily and heartedly munching away without a care in the world. I do not think he is in pain. He can hop, but he is exhausted from doing so.
My question is, is it time to make that decision? I don't want to prematurely end his beautiful little life if I don't need to but at the same time, I refuse to let him suffer. Sorry this is so long, I just thought that this supportive community would be more helpful than wiki answers and my vets is now closed haha. x

I don't know if this helps but my mini lop betsy occasionaly has a sticky bum after washing her bum and feet and drying her off she does hop like you are describing. So hopefully this is the reason.

You know your bun better than anybody and i think when the time is right you will know. If he is eating and drinking fine and you don't think he's in any pain then i personally would see how he gets on.

Thinking of you and Caramel.

Thank you for your kind words.
That's a valid point but I'm not sure. I'm going to assess the situation tomorrow and base my decision on that, but it's going to be very hard.
