Re: Scared for my elderly dog
I am very sorry for your loss, and send you my deepest sympathies.
When my cocker spaniel was doing badly, and not eating/drinking very well, my mother took her to the vet and they found that she had a bowel obstruction from getting into some garbage. They recommend surgery to remove the obstruction, which was risky as she was in a poor state and not at all stable.
We decided to go along for the surgery and sadly, she didn't make it. Something like cardiac arrest due to a reaction to the anesthesia happened whilst she was on the operating table, and they couldn't get her back.
Now, to know our cocker was to know trouble. She was never fully right in her head. We strongly believe she was suffering from some sort of mental condition as she was always aggressive to people and animals, often times without warning. We kept her faithfully and never gave up on her. We gave her a home and peace of mind that she probably wouldn't have otherwise gotten due to her condition.
When she passed on, her earthly remains were cremated and placed in a lovely cedar box with a metal plaque with her name on it. The vets also sent us a condolence card with her paw print on a lovely piece of embossed paper. Something to always treasure I guess.
We buried her remains in the flower garden, where she always stood "guard" and "protected" us from anyone walking by. A statue of a cocker spaniel now marks her final resting place. To us, it wasn't so much a loss, as gaining a sense of peace. Our little crazy cocker had finally obtained peace in her heart and mind and is gone on to a place where she will always be that way.
Now, I strongly believe that our animal friends, those who have truly touched us deeply while they were alive, go onto to be our spirit guides, our guardian angels. They aren't ever really gone from our lives, as they always will live on in our hearts and memories, where their little, or big, paw prints will never fade away.
In fact, I have a kind of relationship with a deceased cat of mine that I grew up with. She was very special and dear to me in life, and now her soul visits me in my dreams from time to time, always letting me know that she is right there, and has never left me. She will forever be the special fur covered, four legged sister I never had (have two brothers, but no sisters) and will always be there, waiting till we can be together again, forever, at the rainbow bridge.

I am so sorry Frankie was called away. Losing a pet is always hard, especially one you spent so many years with. I wish you all the best, and hope you take comfort in the fact that you have Frankie a long and happy life.

Re: Scared for my elderly dog
I am sorry you've lost Frankie. I am glad that your parents were with him. When our great furry friends become ill the best thing we can ever do for them is to help them pass on gently. It's in thanks for all of the times they were there for us when we were sad or in pain. It's for being excited to see us every single time we walked in the door. It's for rolling in the snow with us after a storm drops 2-3 feet of snow. It's for nights where they patrol the house making sure everyone is safe in their beds. It's for all the times gentle eyes followed us around the room. Dogs are extra special friends and it's never easy to say goodbye. The last thing we may do for them is to make sure they know they are loved as they pass. My heart goes out to you and your parents.
