The first time I saw a Degu I nearly fell over. I love gerbils and when I saw them I thought they were giant gerbils. They are like gerbils in that they live in colonies too. Beautiful little critters.

I spent some time last night researching Degus. As much as I would love to get them, it's not going to happen. They need a whole lot more space than hammies do, they require a lot of out of cage time in a large space, they make all kinds of noises (cute), they require companions but have dominance fights where they might have to be separated for some time...in another huge cage. Don't know as I can handle that much.

Having Degus is actually less taxing than any of my other pets I find haha, and we even have a special needs one :P They are a lot less busy when they come out to play so you can often just sit him or her on your shoulder and read or do homework, as they're happy just being around you. I would actually recommend degus over most pets, because of their nature and puppy like attitude. They especially love belly rubs and chin scratches. I found that some of the info out there can be very misleading - as it can be for many pets - so I'm gonna vouch for degus here haha, they're wonderful pets
