Default Gerbil Set up for the month

I have fun changing the gerbils layouts around. I don't do it often - once a month was the plan. With a major clean. They seemed content enough with just a ton of substrate and the driftwood. But after I did their big clean of the month after I set it all up and waited a week - I wasn't really happy with how I had it set up for them. And they didn't seem to either.

I thought I'd try this out and see what they did with it in a week. (Or maybe overnight).

A burrowing box! Since taking this they have started kicking out so much as they tunnel that then it falls over the sides and when they come back out to play down at the bottom they start rearranging the fallen substrate (which is a mix of Aspen shavings and shredded paper).

Mercury wants to give you the tour (they are seemingly loving it - climbing all over the place and tunneling like mad in the box.

In the Sand Bath (their new favorite toilet and grooming and zen meditation area) - in the food pot (Terra Cotta) and on the Overlook (the flat top portion of the driftwood) and now back into the burrowing box to investigate. (Lennon at this point was down in there busy as could be).

Now I have some more ideas for next month on what to do to change things around. It requires a trip to Lowes for wood.

Cool setup. Looks really good. Let's see how long it lasts though.

That is the best part about gerbils - you get to see what they do to make anything their own! While my son sometimes drains his brain in Disney Junior channel - I'm watching the gerbils conquer and destroy as my favorite program!

I put an album of the gerbils I had, including a real therapy gerbil, Kyle, up the other day in the Gallery. I had two black ones like yours, Slate and Onyx. I thought of them the minute I saw yours. That is a fantastic burrowing box.

Nothing like the Gerbil Show (and to a further extent, the Hamster Show) to really get those viewer ratings up!! Best part is that its totally interactive and hands on!!

That looks amazing!
Your gerbils are the luckiest little boys ever
I wish I'd been this creative with set-ups when I'd had gerbils.

What's in the burrowing box? Just lots of cardboard?

It's mostly filled with aspen and shredded paper but I have it topped off with things for them to chew and a small piece of driftwood to be like the roots to make their tunnels between.

A gerbil was dumped on me when I was young. I knew nothing about them and treated mine like a hamster with less substrate and a wheel he always ignored his wheel and had nothing to do in his environment that gerbils would enjoy. I did put a branch in his cage at least. I feel so sad when I think back to him. So in a way it's like I am making it up to his memory to spoil these guys now that I have more education on the species now!!!

Thanks everybody!!
