we have hens, our4s are all ex battery rescues and are pets first and foremost, which is a good job really as they are all getting on a bit now and are past their lay by dates

Our 2 are silkies, a hen and a cockerel. Awful at laying hahah, but when we do get eggs it's very special. Obviously only for pet purposes, we don't get much back as they're running round the garden all day but we really don't care, they're happy little birds.
We used to have 3 hens though, they were more your normal farm ones. Eggs everyday back then But again, only for pets.

I house sat for the boyfriend's aunt and uncle once, they had chickens. Having free range eggs every morning was amazing, and they were surprisingly full of character

I don't know much about rearing for meat....that tends to be a whole different ball game to keeping them for eggs. Different breeds are better for different purposes and I guess if you're keeping them for meat you don't need to consider aspects of longer term care and things like feeding supplements to help with egg formation etc.

My only advice would be to ask/warn neighbours. The house 2 door down got some duck, but we were a little annoyed because they are very noisy and we have a big cat who likes to hunt :O
