My latest pet..
Meet the newest pet member of the family! I found him by our house 2 weeks ago, caught him and put him in the rabbit run whilst I tried to trace his owner. I found his owner who told me to let him go as he would fly back to him.Except he didn't. I found him by the house again 2 days later not flying properly, so I released him again and today he turned up at the top of the lane and walked back to my house. He was a racing pigeon but he can't or won't fly, prefering to walk instead and his owner has no interest in him as he is of no use to him. I was going to find him a new home, but as he has grown used to me and seems determined to stay I have decided to keep him! Whilst I was trying to catch him I was calling him Pidge or Pidgey (after the Pokemon!, and he responds to it now so I think that is what his name will be staying as. I have never had a pigeon before so it's a new one for me. He's a cheeky little thing and starts cooing when he wants feeding! He has also well and truly settled himself into the run, so now I need to make my buns a new exercise run!

Re: My latest pet..
Er... It might be best to make him a more bird-suited home and give the rabbits their run back...
Good luck with him

Re: My latest pet..
I read his story earlier, did the owner get back to you the second time?

Re: My latest pet..
Sorry I should of put about putting him the rabbit run. It's not one of those flatish type runs, it's one of those chicken coop style ones with a house/nesting box built in, and I've also added a couple of ledges to it. It is designed for chickens really, I made a mistake when I bought it as I think it doesn't give the buns enough floor space. Rather than buy a bird house, I figured it would be better and cheaper to keep Pidge in the pen as it's a good size for one pigeon (it's designed for 6 hens!) and make a more suitable and bigger run for the rabbits.

Doesn't want him. He can't fly so is no good to race and he can't find his way home so no good there either.

Re: My latest pet..
are you sure you are doing the right thing keeping him, after all the arguements with your parebts about your other pets, and struggling to buy a new cage when needed for your rabbits.
the chicken coop is NOT suitable for a pidgeon, if you are going to keep him cooped up he needs a full flight aveiry, he also needs a home with other pigeon friends

Re: My latest pet..
Hi Colliewobbles. Snap! I also have a beautiful grey racing or show pigeon hanging around my garden and he has a ring on each leg. Problem is, he can fly and although friendly, won`t let me nab him to read the numbers on his rings. One ring is yellow, the other a silvery grey colour. I was hoping he would fly home, but because I feed the garden birds with millet and peanuts, he`s hanging around! Has done so now for over a week.
And....chances are if the owner you contacted doesn`t want him, he would probably be culled, so keeping him, or giving him the choice of sticking around or flying off are your best options. Feed him by all means, but don`t feel you need to house him unless he has an obvious injury. I`m sure he will stick around anyway as he has found a friend. Just be aware that he is used to being raced and fed on a racing pigeons diet, but they do adapt to being fed wild bird food, corn, rice and small bits of brown braed. Make sure he had a ceramic water dish on the floor.
