Any pets we have, are always under the banner of 'my pets', rather than 'our pets'. I'm the one that cleans poo off toys, feeds, deals with the vast majority of the livefood (guess who spent her day cleaning out roach, mealworm and beetle tubs!), and has the hour-long out-of-cage time with the hog. And when it is time for the robos, I'll be the one cleaning/feeding/handling them as well.
That said, he does do Bodhi's water every night, puts her wheel back on it's stand (I wash it, but it is something
), and eyeballs the bug gel in the beetle tank. He also vacuums out her cage while I wash the toys/houses/etc.
We both agreed before we got her that we missed having pets in our lives (he's a cat man, I'm deathly allergic to cats...but am a rodent/dog person!). Getting the hog was my idea, and was funded mostly by me (and a nice fat cheque from him for my birthday present). The same with the robos - he found them in the pet shop back in the spring, said they were cute...I decided we needed some, and have bought all their bits and pieces, but again, he owes me a podgy cheque for christmas to actually pay for the critters themselves.
As long as it is a 10 minute discussion (rather than a rambling 4 hours), he's happy to chat about things - will come and nod correctly at pictures of hamster toys on the internet, and listen to fun facts I've learnt that day about whichever animal I'm looking at.
But then, I did start the relationship telling him that primates are my life, and that they will always come first, and I guess that extended to other beasties. He's my favourite human, but he knows better than to try to deny me something - he's just not terribly good at saying 'no'
