Thank you Coco. Yes I did wonder if Chinchillas maybe tricky. Also they are still nocturnal. Or crepuscular. But asleep during the day.

I think we need something ideal for all of us. I am not sure we would have space for a decent sized Guinea pig enclosure indoors. Possibly. I'd have to see some guinea pigs first in case I was allergic to those - these things are much harder to achieve during the pandemic!

We will probably get an outdoor cat though - to keep the rabbits down! And make sure no rats start appearing.

I know how you feel, to a certain extent.

I used to own horses, they're my dream animal and still to this day are but a fair few people in my family are allergic to them and I wanted to have a lot of them watch me go riding and competing. May seem a bit ridiculous but you'd be surprised how much hair can float around inside an arena, even if it's an open arena. The sheltered seating area can catch a lot of that hair. I can't own them anymore due to finance issues (and stabling them is expensive each week by itself) so I had to sell them up after one of them passed away in 2016 and wait until I get a bit older and get myself stable to own them on my own property. (I hope to one day achieve with stables and a paddock)

As for pets, there's a few I can recommend but some may be too 'exotic' for you.

- Parrot (budgies, macaws etc.)

- Ferret

- Rats; I know you stated your son is scared of them. But maybe showing this video may help. Bean was such a lovely rat. Before I saw this video I didn't acquire to owning rats... now I can't stop thinking about getting two or more (they are social animals and require a pair or group). But it was a little too late as I had just stepped back into the world of owning hamsters. I don't have the funds for rats on top of the pets I have.
RIP Bean - Tribute to the Most Amazing Little Rat - YouTube

- Chipmunk

I would suggest a Sugar Glider, I want one of those as my pets too after studying during my degree. These are really exotic though and although they don't require a license they can be pretty hard to care for, especially for a child.

Thank you Imogen. Lol its OH who is scared of rats, not stepson Can you really get a chipmunk? I did suggest sugargliders and stepson was quite keen at first but he googled "do sugar gliders make good pets" and unfortunately the first article he came across said no. So that was that.

Birds we ruled out. Not just for asthma (which may or may not be an issue) but I know a bit too much about bird fanciers lung so am paranoid about that. Although my nana had budgies for years without issue.

Well, I'm biased, but has he considered gerbils? They're active in the day, very easy to care for, and fun.

Obviously a huge ratty advocate. I have managed to "turn" every single person who has met mine- family, friends, workmen, random public on buses and trains at vets! They are very affectionate and interactive, you can teach them tricks like a dog..they even wag their tails like a dog! I'd say they require an initial payout but then upkeep is cheap- I buy bedding and food in bulk.

I personally do not agree wiht exotics like gliders, skunk etc

Do you want an interactive pet or a "watch" pet?

I always fancied ferrets and know a few people who have them.

I know people with chins but with their long lifespan of up to 20 years, most aren't "cuddly" and do require special diet and climates my vet friend says so I decided no.

What about any reptiles? I know some people with geckos and bearded dragons that were quite affectionate which suprised me!

Also have friends with giant african land snails they say are friendly!

Mantis, stick insects and various beetles too!

Interactive I think Personally I just want another robo lol. Gerbils - hmm. I think anything in a cage is less naturally interactive. I'll see what he thinks about a lizard - although sounds a lot of hassle to me!

Oh believe me if I could convince them a rat wasn't actually a rat, I would! Call it something else ha ha.

Yes, rats really give pet rats a bad name.

I don't think reptiles are difficult to keep and a bearded dragon can grow into quite a good size so isn't fast and they enjoy interaction and out of cage time.
I'd love one but my OH isn't keen on them (i could convince, bribe or blackmail him) but the house isn't big enough.

You can still get a Robo as well.

Lol! Yes I know - I convinced OH about the Puppy (as a pedigree it was expensive - in the hope I wasn't allergic to that "hypoallergenic" breed - or we'd have got a rescue dog. OH wasn't keen on the cost!). I had never had a problem with poodles before - a friend had one - but it was some time ago and I guess things can change (my age?)

I have heard lizards can grow quite big. I am really not sure he'd be that interested though and then I'd be stuck with a giant lizard for 10 years!

I think it's the progression from cuddly toys and teddy bears - outgrown - not cool for a 13 year old new teenager. So a real cuddly pet is a real pal. I think ultimately it's about wanting a pal who'll react with him and a dog would have been perfect. It's why I keep thinking a rat would be ideal.

When we first got Charlie (who was a big hamster) OH was very unsure and said he looked a bit like a rat (he was the size of a small rat!) and wasn't keen at first - but of course got to love him when he used to sit next to him on the sofa.

But he has a total aversion to rats. And yes rats give rats a bad name!

I've seen a few bearded dragons for rehoming but wonder if they can have behavioural issues if no longer wanted and rehomed (maybe they have been rehomed a few times).

Remember, ratS, never just rat

Rats are so interractive. My grandma who is in her 80's had rats in the garden and attic and would scream pure hatred for them, but there are so many colours and marking, and the dumbo eared ones..she didn't see mine as "rats" and once they started grooming her and cuddling up she was converted!
