Re: Flummoxed by the pantry moth
I'll get carpet moth traps for downstairs and upstairs they can go on the top of the stairs and the bedroom. Thanks for the tip.
Rory still runs around but he doesn't climb the shoe rack now. He stopped jumping down the stairs as well. He's too old but i had to let him have a go and take a tumble to convince him. He's fine about it now and doesn't ask so traps can go on the stairs.

Re: Flummoxed by the pantry moth
I was wrong it was clothes moths traps I used on the floor but they did catch moths. The pheromone traps for pantry moths didn't work but these caught quite a few. It says they are child and pet safe (the sticky stuff is inside the triangle shape) but I would still think a hamster would try and get in there! I seem to remember I had them on the floor near the cage but would take them up in the evening and put them on a shelf (when the hamster was out).
After the pantry moth pheromone traps did nothing, I photographed a few to try and identify them. Some of them were standard brown moths and some more like Indian meal moths (but there were a heck of a lot!). Gradually, with the traps it got less and less (and some squishing and hoovering).
I can imagine you'd want to go and live in Scotland! Quite fancy it myself. We're not too far from the border here really. "Almost" Scotland.

Re: Flummoxed by the pantry moth
I've checked through all the cages now and emptied most of them but haven't found any more moth. I am so knackered but the hamsters are full of energy.
Robo Scottie is wheeling in the hall and Syrian Clive is wheeling in the hamster room.
Why i let the two fastest hamsters out of their cages this time of the night, i do not know....

Re: Flummoxed by the pantry moth
They do keep us on our toes. With me it's Raffy attacking the carpet like he wants to kill it. I can imagine you're knackered - I felt like that after just one night of sorting Raffy's cage with the new house and wheel. I'm sure it'll all be fine.

Re: Flummoxed by the pantry moth
Got them.
They've tired themselves out from wheeling and running around and have both gone to bed. And that's where i'm heading too....

Re: Flummoxed by the pantry moth
I just took a photo of a pantry moth on the outside of my front door!
I always thought they enter a house in petfood, flour etc.

Oh wow! So perhaps they are coming from somewhere outside. How odd.

Re: Flummoxed by the pantry moth
Hmm. Maybe it was too hot in the house and it wanted out ha ha. I don't think moths are very clever. Or - maybe it flew out by mistake when the door was open and trying to get back in again.
Is that one definitely a pantry moth or one of the other types? It has the look/shape but I've had quite a few small normal moths in the house since the hot weather and they're not the pantry ones. I still squish them just in case so they don't produce!
As mentioned before, I had them all in the food cupboards but found some were different- carpet moths - they were just all over the floor round the cage! But at night they'd just sit on walls and ceilings. I think they only go for the food to lay the eggs.
Although come to think of it they must eat something!
