Let's just assume that the moth had not left the house by mistake. I'm more comfortable with that thought, lol.

Didn't know there were normal moth as well. Any small moth is my enemy facing instant extermination. I've become quite paranoid about them and reach for my glasses soon as i see something move that is not a hamster.

I just showed my partner the picture of the moth and we think it looks like the moths we sometimes have here. Maybe it is a harmless moth rather then a pantry one. I hope so anyway.

I hope so too and I am also paranoid about them and nipping things in the bud. This is a moth free zone. I have noticed a lot of them around since this very hot weather - a lot of insects generally. I hope they are only coming in from the Windows. To me the tell tale sign is if you see one nonchalantly walking in and out of the cage bars! Or on the wall near the cage.

We’ve also had some of these moths in the house. I’ve searched around Hams cage but have not found anything that looks suspicious but I’ll defo be keeping a closer eye over the warmer months. With the doors open late eve and the telly or a lamp on you’ll always get the odd bug, gnat, moth fly in for the light. Fingers crossed we all remain moth free. Think it’s fairly common to have a few in the warmer months but apart from the truly pretty ones any that are small and brown have to go.

Pantry moths aren't seasonal though. I had them in January.

Yes it was winter when I had them, but heat can be what makes them hatch out. I had left the lounge warm and cosy all night in winter with an oil fired heater ok not far from the cage. Apparently the eggs can just be dormant in food unless the environment is right for them to hatch out. That was before I knew about freezing food!

Oops eek! Thought they were mainly a warmer month thing. Thanks to all the advice on this forum I’ve been freezing everything too, so hopefully minimising risk. Will keep a close look out.

So could one fly in the house and lay eggs in the food or bedding? Or do you think they tend to lay dormant in food supplies.

They just come from pet food Stanza. Not the kind of things that would randomly fly in the house. Most pet foods contain moth eggs - they're too tiny to see. Apparently they can be in flour as well! Apparently moths can lay eggs through plastic. So usually it's to do with large warehouse storage as to how they've managed to lay eggs in pet food - which probably isn't stored to the same degree as human level food.

If you freeze the food it kills the eggs so they can't hatch out. They tend to only hatch out in very warm conditions (could be hot weather or could be a hot room in winter ). I think the correct term is Indian Meal moth (pantry moth).

I'll leave it at that so I don't creep Ria out on her thread!
