Default Hamster and cats?

We have a detolf for our dwarf hamster.
We would love to get an older cat from the local rescue.

Currently, we have a half glass (from the shelves) then a half self-made lid with wood with small metal mesh for ventilation.

How secure do people think it is?
She's never escaped.
Do you think a cat would get in?
Could I make it safer?

I want to reduce any risk, so advise would be great

If you really must get a cat, i think the only way to ensure the hamster's safety is to never, ever let the cat in the same room the hamster is in.

Maybe giving a pair of rescue guinea pigs a home could be another and safer option?

I have seen were peoples cats have destroyed the lids they made for their hamster cages, so me personally I would only feel safe if a hamster was in a room that the cat was never allowed access to.
