The Mouse Thred!
Some of us have got a bit carried away recently regarding mice , so I have decided to start this thred so that we do not annoy any other memebers!
I myself, am thinking about getting a small group of mice in the future and have been researching quite alot. Mice seem a bit more difficult to keep than hamsters, and they require quite different things to our usual furry friends. But they do seem like great fun to keep as pets and it is something that I would really love to do.
So, if any one has any inforamtion, hany hints or tips I would love to hear them. Also if anyone who is a member here also keeps mice I would (and a few other forum members!) love to hear your experiences!

I'm a bit stuck on ideas on what else to fill it with as i'm so used the hamster toys!
Just wondering why you think mice are more difficult?

Re: The Mouse Thred!

Re: The Mouse Thred!
i might as well post this if people are interested in laerning more:
All About Mice
Its a great informational site but with a great forum too
Also i think i'll put my opinion on basic care needs. Influenced by the things i've elarnt from this site.
Cage - some great ones include the freddy 2 and other rat cages with suitable bar spacing.
height is good for mice as they like to climb, but a good floorspace is also needed!
bedding - i would use megazorb personally as thats what i already use,
but the same rules apply with mice with respitory problems caused by dusty bedding.
food - there aren't many ready made foods out there on the market for mice and ones that say for hamsters and mice are not right! They have different needs.
Its a good idea to make your own using either a rat mix or dog kibble to provide neccessary protein and other stuff. With things like wholemeal cooked pasta, shreaded wheat, oats and puffed rice. more info here : All About Mice Feeding - Staple Diet
cage accessories - they need something to chew on, and oppertunities to dig explore and climb. hammocks, ladders and ropes are big favourites see these for some good toys:
Fuzzbutt Cage Comforts - Funky handmade robust squishy rat hammocks, chinchilla hammocks and unique cage furniture. Come on in and Fuzzify your cage!!

Re: The Mouse Thred!
YAY! Piccys please SarahJ! I would love to see your meeces!Glad to hear that you use a plastic tank as this was what I was planning to do - untill I read a post that said mice should't be kept in cages without bars as it is cruel to stop them climbing. But surely with ropes and hammock and toys they can sill get lots of climbing action!?
FM - I can't view photobucket at work (damn filter!) (yes, I am sneekily typing away!)but I will look at your link when I get home.
I think that they are difficult just becuase I have read so much contradictory advice, as to cages, feeding, how many to keep in a group, I just don't know what will be best for me!

Re: The Mouse Thred!
i can post it as a image then i just didn't want to stretch the page
and i see your point about the advice. I just try and stick to the allabout mice site as i know they are experienced breeders and owners and my own common sense. But of course i will always check that what i plan to so is right.
