Feeling like a bad owner...
So as some of you know, i have recently lost one of my guinea pigs (Lilly) and one of my rats, Evie. If all that wasn't enough now Sooty, my oldest rabbit, is dying. She's 11 and her breathing has got bad really suddenly and her eyes (which she has always had issues with ever since a baby) were literally glued shut today with white gunk... I cleaned them gently and put some eye gel into the eye to help soothe them, but apart from that there isn't much else i feel i can do...
I have no money and no job, though have a group assessment at petsathome soon so hopefully i won't be jobless forever. I have absolutely no money for vet care at the moment so i'm trying to make her as comfortable as possible. I did the same thing with Evie too but she didn't make it... The money that i do have is to be spent on necessities: food for me, food for animals, bedding/substrate for animals and petrol.
I feel so helpless, i want to do my best to care for my animals but at the moment it seems i can't do anything right...

Re: Feeling like a bad owner...
Sorry Sooty is poorly. You have not done anything wrong your pets are just getting old. I think it is unlikely a vet could do anything in that case and just making them as comfortable as possible until they pass is what's needed. Nature will have her way. xx

Re: Feeling like a bad owner...
Maybe also the vet would let you pay the bill slowly? If you feel your bunny needs to be PTS. I'd see about contacting the vet

Re: Feeling like a bad owner...
Hello Hrl20100. Piebald's right. You just happen to be at a point where these animals are getting old together. I've had that happen myself in the past. I've learned to stagger getting my pets so that won't happen. And even then, sometimes an illness can carry off a young animal. You are by no means a bad pet parent.
This is a very hard time for you and I am so sorry it's happening at a bad time for you financially too. Sort of like it's all come together at once on top of you. That's hard to handle. Keep Sooty as comfortable as you can and be gentle to yourself. {{hugs}}

Re: Feeling like a bad owner...
I'm so sorry to read this, but, Piebald is right. We all know how much you love all your pets and you only need to look at the pics to see how happy they are, to see how they are well cared for.
Sending big hugs to you xxx

Re: Feeling like a bad owner...
I'm very sorry to hear that Sooty is poorly
Maybe the vet could let you pay the bills in installments?
I can guarantee you, you are a wonderful owner and your pets could not receive better care

Re: Feeling like a bad owner...
I am so sorry to hear about your losses and that Sooty is poorly.
As the others have said, you are not a bad owner, you are just having to deal with a number of your pets getting old / falling ill at the same time.
Added on to the financial worries it's all a lot to deal with.
Think about it this way, if you didn't care, you wouldn't worry that you are a bad owner
I hope Sooty gets better and that you get a job soon.
Good luck with the Pets at Home assessment.

Re: Feeling like a bad owner...
I'm very sorry to hear about Sooty and the other two pets. I hope you get the job soon and I hope Sooty pulls through. You are not a bad owner as you care. Bad owners are ones that don't care about there pets to do anything even when they are sick, they would just leave them but you care because you love your pets.

Re: Feeling like a bad owner...
So very sorry indeed. After Lilly, my heart went out to you when I read about Evie. Now Sooty is ill. Piebald has said it and we all agree. You are a marvellous pet owner and we love your threads about them. It is such bad luck that this has happened but is no reflection on you as an owner. Your circumstances will take a good turn soon. Lovely that you want to work with pets, that will really improve the service there. Good luck with it.
Hugs for you at this difficult time.

Re: Feeling like a bad owner...
Having the bunny PTS is the kinder way to go. Not letting the bunny struggling to breath. Only you know how bad the situation is. If she can't eat or drink then it would be a good pet owner to do something about it, not let it suffer. I don't think we have all the facts about how bad off your bunny is? I'm not condemning you but trying to help you do what is right.
My friend told the vets that many animals are suffering cause you charge way too much. He said thus in front of a lot of people & he said they looked like they agreed with him. He said this while paying, I agree tho that many animals suffer because vets are expensive
You could always surrender the bunny to the SPCA & they PTS for free in the US
Even if you just told them you didn't have the money they PTS for free.
I see that you don't live in the US but maybe there are charity rescues in your area?
