Well today I got my food cupboards filled again I bought some lock and lock boxes and restocked with flour, sultanas, sugar and all the other dried foods and ingredients I had to chuck.

I now have a very clean food cupboard with neat plastic airtight boxes in. It looks very strange lol! A bit clinical. I used to quite like seeing the packets - Bero, Cadburys and so on and I quite liked it a bit higgledy piggledy. But the bonus is I seem to have a lot more space in there now, can find things easier and nothing can get at my food!

No moths the last two nights, fingers crossed.

Yay. It's amzing what a good storage container can do.

on a semi related note: I came home to a Giant one perched on my front door probably about the length of my thumb, I thought of you and took a picture.

Thanks for thinking of me! I quite like them in the open - just not invading my living area lol. Now I'm just keeping my fingers crossed Charlie's cage stays ok - he has hoarded a lot food out of sight since his big clean - it's well buried!

Charlie being sensible as always. Soon he will be a Smaug again sitting on his hoard.
Kitchen organisation is very impressive!

Wow, I read the whole thread and now I am itchy all over. I actually sidestep this whole problem and put new food in the freezer from the get-go when I buy new food or treats.
Hamsters eat insects in the wild anyway, so if a bug gets in a cage it won't bother the hammy. What a problem you wound up with though. Glad it's cleared up.

Well just when I thought they had gone, I came down late last night to find three flying around the room and one near the food cupboard. Grr. So hoovered them up and took the hoover bag outside. So I guess I still need to keep an eye on things. Just wondering if I should replace Charlie's hoard with new food.

I think they might have come from his food hoard

Well - he did have a full cage clean, new food each day and his bowl cleaned out each day. Plus the food he has hoarded had all been frozen first. But I suppose a stray moth could have laid eggs in the new hoard, and he's been making his new hoards for about 10 days now. Can't remember how long they take to hatch. I could have just missed some eggs in crevices near the food cupboards maybe as one was sitting on the door of the food cupboard the little bligher! I'll do it out with vinegar again. Easy to remove the food now it's all in lock and lock boxes
