Sceptical Bedding
Hey! So I was planning on cleaning out my hamster today so asked my dad to pick up some more of the bedding he got different stuff not the plain white pieces but this weird blue and white striped stuff that looks like a washing up cloth torn to pieces.
It is called petlife safe bed paper flakes and it came from pets at home but I'm not sure if I can trust it. I stuck a piece in a glass of water to see if it fully dissolves because I heard that's a good test.
Any help? Is it safe? Does anyone else use it?

Re: Sceptical Bedding
As far as I can tell (from a couple minutes googling), it seems to be made of food-grade paper, same as Fitch (which I and many people use as substrate). So, it's safe.
In future, you could just use shredded toilet tissue as nesting material. =) Probably cheaper in the long-run as those little bags of nesting material are rather expensive for what you get.

Ok! I don't know what happened with the water test because it's been almost 3 hours and it's still there looking the same as before.

Re: Sceptical Bedding
I believe the water test is if you soak the bedding water it be easy to pull apart (Like soaking toilet paper)

Re: Sceptical Bedding
It's still fairly sturdy and not too easy to pull apart either way after sitting in water for over 5 hours

Re: Sceptical Bedding
If it's not breaking down in water after all that time I'd bin it & stick with toilet tissue (plain white unscented or anything) tried, tested, cheap & safe!

Re: Sceptical Bedding
If your not happy cookietiger, take it back for a full refund and pop into Aldi. They sell nine rolls of plain white toilet paper for £1.99p. Lidl also sell it but for a bit more. If it`s bedding you mean (for sleeping with) rather than floor substrate, then yes, plain cheap white toilet paper ripped into pieces is the safest and it goes a long way. You may also want to look at the smallest 8 Litre bags of Supreme Cosi n Dri. The makers of Carefresh. This is a lovely soft non dusty substrate and also makes a cosy nest. Don`t know if Pets At Home sell this but you can get it online. I use it in my Russian hybrids nest area and he loves it. Very absorbent too. x
