Talking Differences of opinion

Well, we're still living in a nightmare situation (long story) but as the promises made by the owner have proven to be nonsense and we feel we've suffered enough we're working on getting out of our lease using legal means and looking for someplace new!

We looked at a couple of places yesterday. One was nice, but too small and too dark. The yard was huge but mostly unusable for gardening thanks to the huge overshadowing trees. I felt bad for the owner because he's been trying to rent it for ages and couldn't find anyone.

Next place we looked at informally because the owner wasn't around but she said to just go look and we'd meet tomorrow.

I. AM. IN. LOVE.

It's a small 1940's house and my view through the front door showed a built-in bookcase with leaded glass doors and a fireplace, which may not be functional. The bookcases were all I needed to see about the house

Then we went in the yard, which looked small at first but then we rounded a corner and we realized that it was a very oddly shaped lot that hid most of the view from the house. It's about 1/2 acre with fruit trees! Huge, gnarled, venerable apple trees from some pioneer farmstead, still loaded with late apples. Plus one pear and a huge old peach tree that's been espaliered against the house.

The whole yard has been neglected and is overgrown with brambles. It needs me! My roommate however was more reserved. He kept pointing out all the things wrong with the house, from the perimeter drains to the soffit. Yes, yes I said, that's all well and good, but...LOOK AT THE APPLE TREES!

He thinks I'm a Pollyanna, I think he's a Negative Nancy

Actually Braingirl, I'm so pleased that you are looking to get away from that very bizarre lady. No one should have to put up with that. The house with the fruit trees sounds wonderful. Good luck in your house hunting!

Thanks DrKMcK I actually had put an ad out of my own asking for a place and in my list of "nice features of an ideal place" was apple trees. Not all that difficult to find around here thanks to the fact that there were a lot of fruit farms back in the day and a lot of older residential properties still have the remains of the orchards they took over. I didn't get any responses though and it's not something that's usually listed as a feature. People just don't care and often they just let the fruit fall and rot I've been scanning pictures of posted properties carefully and I thought I spotted a fruit tree in the back of this place. I was not expecting what I found however! Seriously, some of these trees are the size of a 2 storey house!

When I was young we had a huge back yard. We had a gorgeous cherry tree and my dad would pick all the cherries for us and for neighbors. We also had a pear tree, crab apple trees and the most gorgeous huge Lilac bush as big as a tree. Every Spring our house was full of vases loaded with lilacs. It's still my favorite flower. If you care for them, fruit trees provide fruit for all year round if you can them. Apple butter, apple jelly, apple pies, slices of apple in oatmeal, baked apples with cinnamon and brown sugar. I adore pears and would love to have trees like that in my yard.

Gee, it's early morning and I haven't had breakfast, now I'm drooling! I could have apples in oatmeal this morning though because I picked up a couple of fallen apples and brought them home

Maybe you could explain to Negative Nancy that problems with soffits etc can be put right, a friendly chat with the landlady may solve all sorts of worries but Apple trees the size of a 2 story building can't be grown overnight

Good luck in whatever you decide

Good point, Willow Wisp! I'll try that argument on him. Probably won't touch his cold, hard, flinty heart (ok, that's not exactly true) but I'll give it a try It is right on a major thoroughfare and could potentially be noisy, but the yard is so deep and hidden that it's like a bit of the country that got forgotten.

I really hope so Gazmo! I've been looking for ages but my roommate has wanted to believe the promises our landlord kept making. So did I for that matter but I like to be prepared for anything and kept looking. We won't be able to leave right away, but this afternoon is when we pick up the letter that should get the ball rolling

Braingirl - your someone after my own heart. The bookcases would have done it for me as well, then the apple trees and potential free food - well that would have done the deal.
