Re: Colby's Animal Fact of the Day
More Random Animal Facts:
Hyenas live in a matriarchal society. The dominate female is leader of the clan and her daughters and sisters, as well as all other female members, always rank higher than any of the males. Males must submit to any female member of the clan by lifting their rear leg and allowing the female to smell their scent.
The dominate female will actually produce really high levels of testosterone and because of that, will grow a pseudo-penis. Her bits will actually start to look more and more male-like. This increased testosterone is what makes her so powerful and dominate.

Re: Colby's Animal Fact of the Day
Hyenas really fascinate me for that reason. I mean, lots of animals societies are matriarchal (chinchillas for example) but hyenas are the only ones I know of with the extra testosterone!

I had no idea chinchillas were matriarchal, I've learnt something today! The hyena's pseudo-penis thing is really strange...

Re: Colby's Animal Fact of the Day
Another random fact:
Giraffes will fight in a particular way called "necking". Its very brutal and like the name suggests, it involves throwing the neck and head at the opponent, with the opponent doing the same. Necks can be broken and skulls cracked, and giraffes have died doing this. Its usually done between males who are sparring for dominance and mating rights to a female.
And another:
While the hippo is generally thought to be a herbivore and grazes nightly on grasses near its river home, it will consume meat, even another hippo on rare occasions. This behavior is usually more commonly observed during the long hot dry season when grasses are dried up and fresh green grasses are scarcer.

I'm taking over for Colby for a few days as she is on vacation mine might not be just as fascinating, but i hope you enjoy it none the less.
a lifespan of a dragonfly is only 24 hours
The green anaconda weighs 500lb the same as a black bear!
A hummingbird weighs less than a penny
A cockroach can live 9 days with it's head cut off
A ostrich's eye is bigger than it's brain

Re: Colby's Animal Fact of the Day
Actually ChocolateCream (dons her animal nerd glasses and pocket protector), the notion that a dragonfly lives as an adult for only 24 hours is a mere misconception. The dragonfly lives for well over a year, depending on the species. Most of that time is spent in the nymph stage, which can last from a year to well over a few years. Once the Nymph as shed its skin and emerges as an adult dragonfly, it usually lives for a couple more months, then dies. There is no known species that has an adult life that is 24 hours long.
Also, and not to nit pick, but only the largest of the known specimens of the green anaconda reach 500lbs or more. There weight is usually found to be in the range of 66lbs to 154lbs, though an accurate assesment of average weight among specimens is difficult due to their home range being mostly thick and inaccessible jungle terrain.
And, just to add, only the smallest species of hummingbirds, like the bee hummingbird of Cuba, weigh less than a penny.
