Re: I'm officially a micro-farmer!! ([WARNING:] creepy crawly factor)
That's GREAT you are doing this for your hammies!.. as for me, ..... I have an "bug phobia" LOL.. can't even hook a worm on the end of a fishing pole..!... My daughter wanted to capture a "tree frog" once, it was such a cute little frog... of course I said, okay... after spending a ton of money, buying the frog an habitat, it didn't dawn on me, what they eat as pets.. YEEEEKS!... I SCREAMED louder than my little girl, when I had to feed the frog, crickets, a few times per day, each day!.. After a few weeks, of this.... the frog mysteriously found it's way back to it's home.. (back in a tree). HA!.. Best of luck to you.. you are very BRAVE!.. BTW-Only bug/worm I'd eat, is the worm in a "Tequila" bottle.. haha!.. I'd have to be drunk, and drink a lot of Tequila, before the worm..

I can't wait to see pics!!! We haven't gotten around to feeding them live meal worms (SO has a big ew factor. I got shivers a bit, but figured it'd be better for both of us to get freeze dried for now).

Re: I'm officially a micro-farmer!! ([WARNING:] creepy crawly factor)
Hekomi, I posted pictures on the very first post of this topic, as attachments.
Anyways, I got some more mealies to supplement the "farm", but these new ones are "giants" meaning that they are twice as big as regular sized mealworms. They are pretty big. About the size of "superworms" if anyone's familiar with those.
So far so good. *crosses fingers*

I know the ones you mean Holly. I never have figured out if they're just ordinary mealworms who've been fed really well or if it's a whole strain that's been specially bred to be large. Do you know? Will they produce extra-large offspring by crossing with your current beetles?

Apparently they've been fed some bran laced with steriods/growth hormones to keep them from pupating, and to keep on growing as mealworms, which is why they are so large. Their offspring will be of normal size, as characteristics that aren't genetic won't be passed on down the line.

So I'm now growing mealworms for the hams, the gecko, and...my little brother's Venus flytrap, who he adores and says requires "fresh food". Haha!
