Default New Rescue Gerbil

There I was at the vets with Darcy the Hamster (she has a lump, 6 months old *sigh* another story...) and in rushes a woman and her son with a cat carrier, nothing unusual in that you would think.... She runs up to reception and says "I have just found this propped up against my car, what is it?" Of course I volunteer to have a look in the basket. Inside is a little black Gerbil exactly like my Jet, except this poor mite has obviously been in a bad fight, hes covered in wounds and his eye is swollen closed, hes painfully thin too.

The lady says can you take him, I can't I have cats and no cage, the receptionist says sorry we can't help, we aren't a rehoming center you'll have to take him to one in the next town. So she sits down and starts fretting about whats going to happen to the little guy, I opened the cage door and looked at him, he came bounding over to me and straight into my hands, I took Darcy's bottle and offered it to him, he was so thirsty So I looked at the other half, he looked at me and I said "I'll take him home"

So I now have another Gerbil, a very poorly one, hes in a state of complete neglect. His eye is very swollen, it looks like hes lost that. He is feeling very sorry for himself but is surprisingly friendly considering. I have put him in a small cage so he can rest and he's doing very well now, he is so friendly I have fallen completely in love with him. The vets gave me a load of medication for him for free which was nice of them. How can anyone just abandon their pet like that? No food or water just a manky old newspaper....

I thought I'd call him Ace, as in 'Black as the ace of spades' although hes so so thin I think I can see small boy bumps but not 100% sure he is a boy at the moment, I'm using the term 'him' loosely

Poorly eye

He was starving bless him

I am in tears reading this - what an absolute shame - poor wee mite - oh you are so blessed to help him - and good for your vet too not profiting from his distress. I am sure in no time he will be back on top form, well done you, hugs Morag x

I must admit, i got a lump in my throat when i read this. Poor little guy, i am so glad he had found his way home with you Spacemonkey. He couldn't have wished for a better home

And it disgusts me to think that someone could leave an animal in this state

Aw, another Darcy Bunsey, that's a coincidence!

The little 'guy' is doing very well, hes lost some fur from around his numerous wounds but they look clean and no hint of infection which is good. The eye is still swollen and closed, I think hes going to have to learn to live without that but it doesn't seem to bother him now hes rested fully and is full of beans. He doesn't seem to want to eat much, I have tried tempting him with all kinds of goodies but alas no, I suppose his stomach has shrunk as it looks like he hasn't had a good feed in weeks

Still, excellent progress, I think hes going to make a good recovery. Still ticked off about the idiot who left him out to die, uugh, some people

Oh my gosh! Poor little guy! Theres some evil people in this world! Hes so lucky that you where there, and that the woman had the heart to take him to the vets and not leave him.
Its so sad, it just reminds me that there a lot that arent so lucky

Keep us updated with how he gets on

Oh Ive only just seen this. How could anybody do that??? I guess the only saving grace is that they left the poor guy near the vets maybe on purpose

How fantastically lucky that you were there SM, I love you for taking him and know that the little man will have a wonderful home with you!

I am sure that Ace will live up to his name in every way once he feels better. *blowing poorly Ace kisses*
