There I was at the vets with Darcy the Hamster (she has a lump, 6 months old *sigh* another story...) and in rushes a woman and her son with a cat carrier, nothing unusual in that you would think.... She runs up to reception and says "I have just found this propped up against my car, what is it?" Of course I volunteer to have a look in the basket. Inside is a little black Gerbil exactly like my Jet, except this poor mite has obviously been in a bad fight, hes covered in wounds and his eye is swollen closed, hes painfully thin too.
The lady says can you take him, I can't I have cats and no cage, the receptionist says sorry we can't help, we aren't a rehoming center you'll have to take him to one in the next town. So she sits down and starts fretting about whats going to happen to the little guy, I opened the cage door and looked at him, he came bounding over to me and straight into my hands, I took Darcy's bottle and offered it to him, he was so thirsty
So I looked at the other half, he looked at me and I said "I'll take him home"
So I now have another Gerbil, a very poorly one, hes in a state of complete neglect. His eye is very swollen, it looks like hes lost that. He is feeling very sorry for himself but is surprisingly friendly considering. I have put him in a small cage so he can rest and he's doing very well now, he is so friendly I have fallen completely in love with him. The vets gave me a load of medication for him for free which was nice of them. How can anyone just abandon their pet like that? No food or water just a manky old newspaper....
I thought I'd call him Ace, as in 'Black as the ace of spades' although hes so so thin I think I can see small boy bumps but not 100% sure he
is a boy at the moment, I'm using the term 'him' loosely
Poorly eye
He was starving bless him
