Default Mad hamster lady?!

Is it just me or does anyone else get weird looks and comments when you tell people that you have hamsters????

It drives me CRAZY!!!

I find myself talking about them to other people sometimes and they just look at me like I'm some kind of freak. As if a 24 year old women shouldn't be keeping pets that are apparently 'for children'

Does anyone else get this too?

Arrrrggghhh!
Rant over!!

Yup, although I've got young children so most people assume the hamsters are for them (they're not lol).

The other time I get weird looks is when people see the cages. One woman was shocked I had a hybrid in a zz2, she commented her two guinea pigs share a cage that is smaller...

Oh yes, I'm the crazy hamster lady! I have learnt not to talk too much about them at work, as people just don't understand. When I'm breeding and have babies at home I just can't help myself sometimes!

LOL. I'm going to be 60 this year and I am definitely a crazy hamster lady! I've also been known as the "Dog lady" by my police precinct and as ..."the lady who has all the animals" by every neighborhood kid. I wind up with newborn kittens and as a drop off point for abandoned dogs. Sigh. In my working life I was a psychotherapist and I used gerbils as therapy animals, most notably, my beautiful Kyle. This little gerbil managed to help me get through to 14-16 year old gang boys. One 14 year old used to sit on the floor with Kyle through his whole session. I used to have kids, parents and my co-workers come a-running when I walked into the agency with a shopping bag containing a travel cage. Everyone wanted to greet whoever I had with me that day. At another agency, where I worked with mentally retarded adults, the hammies were a real treat...for my co-workers too! One of my supervisors got pooped on by a hammy and wasn't quite sure what to do . All of my family and friends know about my rodents and expect them all to show up on facebook now and then...and they do. When I was young my mother used to call them my "rats". She hated them, but, since I was my father's pet, if I asked, I got. LOL Therefore, years later, I am a Crazy Hamster Lady...and proud of it.

DrKMcK that is so awesome, using them as therapy pets is such an awesome idea and so nice to hear it worked with those children.

Local p@h shop assistances calls me "hamster lady" but I bet they put "mad" in front when I'm not around. But I can't really blame them as I always check their hamsters and small animals. Few times I have to point out that rabbits had no water /:/ hamsters had no food etc.
I'm actually really proud to tell people that I have little hamster and they seem really interested or at least they act like Interested When people come around and see my hamster photos on the wall along with my dogs they just laugh. But I really think hamster is as much family member as dogs. I think if you are 24 years old you are still almost child and you are allowed to have hamster also if you have young children you are allowed to have hamster but poor DrKMcK and I have no such luck so we are just have to live with the name "mad hamster lady" hehehehe

DrKMcK that's awesome During the fall when I walk my hamsters down the street (In their balls, they're like little ducklings that follow you!) I get all kinds of weird looks, but if you get to walk your yappy blow-dried rats down the street, I get to walk my quiet, well-behaved hamsters down the street. Don't judge!
