Not all people are like that though..

I'm 28 and have 4 of the little furry devils. I had to take an annual leave day when my first passed away a couple of weeks ago, and I spent the best part of a week 'hiding' in a quiet corner of the workplace thanks to my manager. She was brilliant and helped me no end when my little one died.

On the other hand I do have some good friends who think I'm slightly weird for being so obsessed with my little ones. My other half isn't as batty as me, but I catch him talking to them and giving them a cwtch at 2 in the morning when he thinks I can't hear him..

I'm a 40 yr old soon to be Grandma and I just discovered the joy of having a hamster. I do get teased a lot and people tend to roll their eyes when I talk about Mo BUT the people who matter to me love the fact that I have found joy and another being to love. They listen as I share, constantly, everything I have learned and read here. They've seen more Mo pictures than pictures of my now grown children. My son and daughter in law brought me a hamster toy the last time they came to visit.

I guess in a very roundabout way I am saying; those other people can go away. They're just jealous you're comfortable with yourself

It could have easily been me typing your post! Im 26, I have a hamster, I prefer sitting with a cuppa watching tv to clubbing, (Im watching Lewis with a cuppa right now!) so you are not the only one at all! If people are being mean to you its only because they dont understand you and feel threatened by you being different. Hold your head high and ignore them, you know you are a nice person and dont need their approval anyway, there are plenty of people out there who will appreciate you for being you.

Some people just don't understand how rewarding it is to look after animals regardless of their species and size. I'm 33 and I know my friends think I'm bonkers for having a hamster at my age, I think sometimes people think they aren't proper pets because they aren't big like a dog. Last week I rescued a pigeon with a broken wing and I got a lot of stick for that, some of my friends told me that I should have 'pulled it's neck' and why did I bother because they're just vermin.

Please don't let these silly people get you down, I know it's easier to say that than do it. It's commendable that you have a vet fund and are prepared for emergencies. I know what it's like to find yourself down and depressed and, funnily enough, it's Gizmo thats helping me through it. So what if we'd rather spend our money on hammies instead of beer. Call us saddo's but you'll always have like minded people on here to chat to about your little furries.

I'm 24 and a professional and all my friends know I love my hamster. Some now want one of their own, the rest are pretty indifferent. My family has fallen in love with him though after he came home for Thanksgiving and now feel inspired to get a family puppy.

Anyway I'm really posting to ask what is a CUPPA? Is this a British term???

My friends just look a little bemused when I talk about my hamsters. I used to keep my colleagues entertained with stories of what they we all up to - they thought it was a scream when the stud hamster came to stay, and when I picked up Chi in the morning from his former owner and he spent the afternoon in a cage under my desk. Maybe at 43 with 8 hamsters I could safely be regarded as eccentric rather than bizarre....

Thanks Lougarry and psl.

Ahah that is what I initially guessed, but then I didn't think there could possibly be that many people fond of sitting down with tea whenever they watch television or have "me-time." But I forgot this was the British that I was thinking about... and you guys definitely do your tea right. Although when I lived in Oxford no one seemed to understand why I needed cream for my coffee.... you guys could work on that

I think "cuppa" for "cup of tea" is brilliant and I'm going to help it blow up here in California. Might have to replace the longform with "cup of Red Bull" or "cup of Starbucks" though for our folk.

Hi char just ignore them dont let them upset you so what u like hamsters then so be it have them if you can afford it there no harm as long you are the one wanted for yourself.
Im nearly 42 we got our first hamster when I was nearly 41 in fact almost ectly a year ago...but unfortunately died 2 months later we didnt get much of a chance with him (we bought it for my daughter but as Again I got involved) I got a cat with one eye and a dog. so we bought another one as soon as we could which we did. Now ten months on i always check on him every day making sure he fed and watered I have been looking on here for advice and allsort and i have been telling my mil and you know what she said hamsters are animals that need caring just like you are caring for a cat or a dog.
The more you ignore them they cant get nothing out of you dont let them see you upset
I would say something else if you could read my mind but we do have children here aswell.
((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))
