Alexander Cage - Homing
What other pets could go in the Alexander cage? Do you think its only big enough for hamsters?

Re: Alexander Cage - Homing
I wouldn't house anything else in it. Its too small for guinea pigs/rabbits/degus/chinchillas, too short for rats, too shallow for gerbils.
Mice might be ok I guess? But I can't guarantee it as I haven't researched mouse caging much

Re: Alexander Cage - Homing
Mice need to tunnel and dig in their substrate the same way gerbils do-If it's too shallow for gerbils, chances are, it's too shallow for mice. Not to mention that mice don't do so great in barred cages.
I'd stick to hamsters.

Re: Alexander Cage - Homing
Thanks for clarifying that... Then yeah, given the need for burrowing mice and gerbils have, I'd just keep hamsters in there.
Most ham cages are hamsters only though, its fairly normal really.

Re: Alexander Cage - Homing
Duprasi probably could, fat tailed gerbils as they are known. They look like possums.
Possibly Pygmy hedgehogs as they like a llong flat cage.
I'm sure there's others too im not thinking of!

Hmm, that's a good idea vanilla. Pygmys do need single story, long cages. So set up right, it could probably work for them.

Re: Alexander Cage - Homing
Mice LOVE barred cages and they are actually better ventilation wise for mice. I would never keep mice in a tank style cage as it would stink, there would be nowhere to hang stuff and they absolutely love to climb.
The alexander is the cage I want for my mice, they are currently in a HH.
They have lots of hanging toys and fling themselves about like mini mice tarzans!!

Re: Alexander Cage - Homing
To each their own, let's agree to disagree then.
Though I will say that my mice do have a bunch of hanging toys, I just string them throught the wire mesh on top of the aquarium with hemp 'thread' that you can pick up in any hobby store. They each have a hammock, along with wooden chews, and some budgie toys I had leftover from when I thought I would get a bird (I got Yankee and Doodle instead) So that isn't actually an issue.

Re: Alexander Cage - Homing
I think mice would be okay in there. I've had mice in various cages. Barred ones, duna style ones etc. My current mice spent a little time in the Imac Fantasy before Fudge came along and they're now in a meshed ZZ1. They've been happy in all of the cages.
However, i think it depends on the mice. My previous lot were happy in the duna style cage, whereas my current ones hated it and preferred bars (although they're now happy in the ZZ1 which is weird) My old mice didn't tunnel but my current mice love to dig.
I think the Alexander base might be deep enough for mice to dig as they don't tend to tunnel as deep as gerbils do...not any I've had anyway.
If I had the room both Fudge and the mice would be in Alexanders
