How do i upload a display picture?

I've been fiddling about trying to find out how to add a display picture of my little Betty but i just cant figure it out. I know it will probably be something easy and i'll look a write muppet but if anyone could tell me how i'd be very greatful

I am useless at computer stuff, so bear with me,

Go to user CP,
Click on Edit Avatar
Use Custom Avatar
Click choose file
Then this should open up a screen on your computer with your pictures in.
Choose the picture you want & click open
Then the picture code will be in the box.
Click save changes

You should then see your picture under your name on posts
