Re: Chinchilla's in P@H
White chinchillas aren't rare, Erin I've got...two. Used to have another. I just don't have white breeders round here in CO.
I hate pet stores selling chinchillas more than hamsters. Chins have much more complex needs, even though hamsters have fairly complex needs as well. ARGH.

"whites" arent rare at all, standard grey is just a dominant gene

Re: Chinchilla's in P@H
depends what you cross it with, and which "white" you are refering to, crossed with a SG the SG will dominate the white

There is only one white. There is a pink white, which is a beige + white cross. I'm assuming SG means standard, but I've never seen anyone use that abbriviation before. In that case, no. White and Standard bred together will produce a 50% chance of standard and 50% chance of white. White is a lethal dominant though, so white cannot be bred to white.

Re: Chinchilla's in P@H
P@H's I go to always have chinchillas, my first one was from there. They usually only have the grey or beige though, never seen other colors in there. Lots of smaller stores also sell them, my second came from a garden/ farm/ pet centre, and he was white:
This was Abby ( yes I named him whilst I thought he was a girl, and by the time I realised he wasn't, he'd already learnt his name, so I couldn't bring myself to change it!)
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
Unfortunately, Abby was only with me for 11 months, I discovered him sat hunched up, in obvious pain on Easter Sunday last year and he had 3 big hard lumps under his chin. I called a vet out, who asked if I wanted to get a second opinion off a more chin-savvy vet next morning, but he was in a lot of pain, hadn't eaten or drunk anything, and rather than let him suffer all night, I told her to put him to sleep there and then. I love them, but I've not had another one, loosing Abby really upset me, 13 months old is no age for a chin, and as my first one, Wizz, also only lived to 5 1/2 , it sort of put me off owning them.

Re: Chinchilla's in P@H
I HATE that p@H sell chins!
I bred & showed for many years and chins are exotics, not for the 'average family' and NOT for children.
Whites aren't rare but are less common than standard greys and hetero beiges.
I used to breed Standard Greys, Hetero Beiges, Pink Whites, Mosaics (my favourites), and Black Velvets.

Re: Chinchilla's in P@H
I've seen them a couple of times in the P&H near where I used to live in B'ham am in Bristol now....when I went in there once to get some new toys there was a parrot near the checkout as well that was for sale! Was horrified as they too need specialist care, he took ages to be sold which makes me think that maybe he went to a good home hopefully....also he was expensive so fingers crossed he's with someone who knows how to look after a parrot and give him the right care
