KP, syrians are big lazy bears!

If for example, you were out most of the day and evening, a syrian tends to be awake later in the evening (I know my Boris is like this!), so you don`t really need to worry about interacting with a syrian during daytime hours. Some will wake up during the day for nibbles and a drink and a pee! But Boris goes right back to his bed.
Boris is my first syrian for a LONG time and very much a new experience for me as I`m used to keeping mice and smaller hamsters. If I had to be truthful, I actually prefer to keep those, but having Boris has given me a little bit more freedom. Prinny my little chinese was a dream and just what I look for in a hamster. Sweet natured, wants to be out and about earlier in the evening and a good all round pet.
I never really want to have more than one or two hamsters now at any one time because I feel that`s plenty for me to cope with. I suffer from pain issues in my neck and elsewhere, so I have to limit myself on the amount of small animals I can have. I also never buy my pets, I always rehome/rescue them. Like you, I get more pleasure from giving a wee one a better life, whether that be from a rescue centre or the forums/word of mouth. Boris lived with my nephew for seven months before I adopted him as his son was allergic to him for months and they didn`t realise it was the hamster that was the cause! Boris is 16 months old now and a big bear! he is still a little aloof in nature, but a lovely lad all the same.
I would say, if you feel you would have the time, the energy and the funds for a syrian (as you say, they do need a bigger cage, accessories and wheel!) then go for it. Some syrians are advertised with their cages although they are usually too small and need upgrading, but that`s what ebay is for!
Good luck whatever yo decide. x
