I know the feeling. I used to live right next to a commuter railway line, and I got used to sleeping through the heavy goods trains in the middle of the night. It was good preparation for sleeping in uni halls, too.
Since moving out to the relative countryside though, on an estate mostly populated by older people, it's so damn quiet. And yet the hams wake me up.
I find it's easier in summer, when I can sleep with a fan on by my bed - the ambient repetitive noise really blocks a lot out, it's as if my sleeping brain focuses on that and ignores the other sounds. Great for sleeping through hamster activity, not so great if your boss tries to call you early in the morning...
