Moo has gone to the rainbow bridge
Farewell to my dear little Moo. He was a lovely gentle, friendly hamster. His passing has been expected really and I think he had already gone when I went to bed last night, after checking him a couple of times last night. He has been staying in his nest mostly for some time but had continued come out for his baby food and Metacam - and a bit of soft veg and food - right up until the night before he died. Although he always waited till I'd gone to bed before coming out for it so I haven't seen him much recently. This morning his baby food and metacam was untouched.
I had just begun to think we might need a vet visit.
The last time I saw him he came over to the cage door all happy and friendly but then turned to go back in his house. I think that was his goodbye.
I buried him in the garden this afternoon and have put a big pile of stones on top, a wire fireguard round it and lots of evergreen berberis with orange berries on top - no flowers outdoors at this time of year. It looks like a fitting tribute. The stones and fireguard will be removed in a few weeks - they're to protect his resting place for now from cats etc.
Here he is - from the time he came to us at a year old, to recently in October , just before he started to decline.
I miss him already - even though it felt like he had already left a few days ago. He was unconscious last night.

Re: Moo has gone to the rainbow bridge
I’m so sorry to here your sad news Serendipity, even when it’s expected & you know it’s their time it’s still very hard & even more so at this time of year I think.
Such a sweet little man & he had a lovely life with you, happy & comfortable right until he passed into his final sleep.
Run free & play well at the bridge little Moo.

Re: Moo has gone to the rainbow bridge
Thank you Cypher. I am not sure he was that comfortable the last couple of weeks. I kept wondering about whether to help him on his way, but he enjoyed his food and just slept a lot. He didn't show me any signs of wanting anything other than to be independent and left alone. But you always worry if they are in pain or just failing.
Moo was the neatest tidiest hamster I have known. His toiletting habits were perfect, his nest was neat and tidy. He was preparing to go after I adapted the entrances to his house by removing the bottom sections of the doors so they were easier to get through after he'd been chewing at them - as he virtually abandoned his nest and moved into the little compartment next to it.

Rest in peace Moo. So sad when they go. Lucky for him to have had such a caring home and a peaceful end.

I am so sorry to hear about Moo's passing, he was a lovely little man and will be missed.
Moo was very lucky to have lived with you and you did all you could to make his end as comfortable as possible as well.
Play well at the bridge Moo.

Re: Moo has gone to the rainbow bridge
Thank you. As I said he was such a gentle, friendly hamster. A treasure - especially as the year and a bit he lived with us was full of difficulty. He arrived just before my Mother died, and then a few months later we were into lockdown. He always looked happy. It's so sad when they start to go. It is nature taking its course, I know, but I miss the active, happy Moo.

Re: Moo has gone to the rainbow bridge
This is very sad news Serendipity. It does not make it any easier when we realise that it is coming. Moo had a wonderful home with you. He may have been a bit independent minded but coming to see you for a final goodbye shows how much he appreciated your loving care.
He hadn’t been well but he slipped away at home which it always the best when possible.
You have described his final resting place. Is he near Newt and Nugget? And are they near Charlie’s garden?
Love his photos and that final one was a gorgeous autumnal HOM.

Re: Moo has gone to the rainbow bridge
He is further along the flowerbed than Charlie. Extended the bed to dig an area where I could put stones. Newt and Nugget are still on the windowsill (ashes). But may join them in the garden at some point.
