My lil' pal died suddenly!
My ham was fine the night before. When I got home from work, me and my kids checked on her we couldn't find her in her spots and then saw her lying dead in front of her door on the second floor of her cage set up. She had some bedding in her mouth and no real trauma. She might have died during the night but I don't know because I didn't check on her in the AM that morning. She was in fine health the day before and doing generally well. She was 2 months shy of her 2nd year. I feel so terrible! Like I should have been there! What could have happened? I was really attached to her. More than my kids! I liked her more than my current dogs, if you can believe that.

Re: My lil' pal died suddenly!
I am so sorry it's always tough to lose a friend or family member, no matter how small. One year and 10 months is still a good life and it may have just been her time.
There's no way of knowing fir sure what happened unless you ask the vet to send off her body for testing, but at this point it might just be upsetting for you. Was the bedding the cotton type fluffy variety? If so, it is possible she choked on it or similar. Again, not much point speculating now. Don't feel bad or blame yourself. Take some time to remember and mourn.

I am so sorry. 2 years is a great age for a hamster, so maybe it was just her time xxx

Re: My lil' pal died suddenly!
Newmexicohma, I am truly so sorry for the loss of your beloved hammy. I know how devastating and hard that can be to lose someone so loved and cherished. I am sure that she had a long and wonderful life with you and your kids, and you gave her a home filled with so much love and care. Please find comfort in the many memories that you shared and know that there was nothing that you could have done. Although you were not there with you at the end, she knew that she was very loved and appreciated all that you have done for her during her long life. I will be keeping you and your kids in my thoughts and wishing you comfort during your time of sadness. Rest in peace fluffy one and run carefree on the Rainbow Bridge.

So sorry for your loss newmexicoham, that must have been such a shock & it's only natural to wonder what happened & worry that you may have missed something when a hamster dies suddenly & unexpectedly but I would imagine that it was just old age catching up with her.

So sorry for your loss, such a shock to come home to. She was a great age. Treasure the wonderful memories you have of her. I find gettting a cushion of my hams helps. You can select a few of your fave pics and have them transferred onto the cushion. I found a great comfort.

Re: My lil' pal died suddenly!
Thank you, thank you for your replies~
The unknown is difficult and I am amazed at how crafty and devious my brain is for conjuring clever scenarios that infiltrate. Most recently, I imagine my lil' girl going through her tube to the floor of her cage where she tried to call for me with her last hold on life and then died alone after I didn't answer.
And then the choking thing, she had good bedding, nothing questionable, but if she did choke, maybe a pick up and a pet could have helped and then I could have banked another year with her... (I was convinced she would surpass the average because she was so GOOD!
I guess I just wished she could die in my hands or something. Some way I could be with her to the end.
It's getting better but it still hurts.
I just visited her grave and thanked her for her love.
Goodnight lil' cutie!

Re: My lil' pal died suddenly!
SO sorry for your loss. As others have said, 2 years is a good age for a ham, so don't worry, probably it was just her time to go. Think that if it happened so soon, probably she didn't suffer, and that's for the best. Rest in peace

I'm so sorry for your loss
These kinds of things happen more often than you would think, and there's really nothing we can do about it. You gave her a good loving home and that's what really matters. So sorry for your loss, may she Rest In Peace.
