I am so very sorry. What a beautiful and heart rending picture of the tears on the lashes of your child as he cradles Chubby. You must be so proud to see such love and caring in your son and my heart goes out to him.
It is never easy but children do understand and they do accept. Chubby's life was long and filled with devotion and caring. He had the best. We always like to allow the child to take part in the funeral and prepare a box with perhaps a letter or drawing and some things for the hammie. Allow them to lead the way in what they want and help choose a plant to plant over the grave. I am a great believer in the great circle of life and as the plant grows and flowers they will see the hamster reborn in the leaves and petals. Let them know it is OK to cry and encourage talking about the pet and appreciating that it was a great thing to share such a life.
When they are ready a new pet will be waiting to join their lives as Chubby has only made their hearts grow bigger as each one does so that they have enough space for new love forever.
Play well at the bridge Chubby and send a rainbow to your family. Watch out for that rainbow because he will send it when he is ready xxx

I'm so very sorry for yours and your sons loss. Chubby must of had a wonderful life to reach the grand old age of five. The picture is beautiful and very moving. Chubby was a very handsome lil man.

So sorry you lost your little fluff. Five years is a good long life, and you and your son filled his life with all the love he so rightly deserved. Run free little one. Hugs xx

I am so sorry about your little ham passing and about all the sorrow it has brought into your household It is never easy to lose a beloved pet, and there is really no right single way of coping with it. But I think perhaps you could collect some of Chubby's photographs together with your son and put them together into an album, with some decorations and writing to commemorate Chubby's journey in life from a baby to his Very respectable and rare 5 years of age. You could plant a flower together in Chubby's memory.

Maybe your son would take some comfort in the Rainbow Bridge:

The Rainbow Bridge Poem - The beautiful journey of a pet after death.

Perhaps in time, your son will be at peace with Chubby's passing and take comfort in the enviably long life Chubby's had with your family.

Chubby lived such a long life for a hamster, he did so well, and it brought tears to my eyes to see how upset your son is at his passing. You are clearly raising a loving, kind, compassionate child there.
It is so heart warming to see Chubby as a little old man leaving this world surrounded by love. I think the advice given already about helping your son through his grief is fantastic, it is a sad but excellent lesson in the circle of life for a child to experience the loss of a much loved pet as opposed to being sheltered from it.

Play well Chubby, I'm glad you found the home you did xx
