Rest In Peace, Pebbles
The vet said the paralysis in her back legs would certainly get worse, and that any medication would only delay at best, especially if she had stopped eating. Although she was clearly not suffering despite the paralysis and thinness, I made the decision to let her go, based on her age (two years and one month), the fact that she had stopped eating, the fact that there was no hope for recovery, and the fact that a few days could see her discomfort and disability increase dramatically. I am away for short stints often, and didn't want my flatmate (who wouldn't know what to do) to be landed with that decision, or for her to suffer with nobody noticing or being able to help.
Had a little cry and worked through my feelings after they'd taken her away. A mixture of profound sadness, shock (the legs were fine yesterday and through the night), guilt and self-doubt (about letting her go so quickly while she was still alert), relief that I was there, that it wasn't a university day and that the vet was so nearby (and such a good one), peace with the fact that she didn't suffer at all - not one little bit (she was well hydrated, not hungry, alert if a bit tired, curious and calm when they took her away), and pride that everything was managed so smoothly and painlessly. The best possible close to a good, good life. Hope I did her proud. Love you always, Pebbles. Will miss you. Fly high. xxxxxooooxxxx

Re: Rest In Peace, Pebbles
Thanks to everyone for your reassurance and condolences. It really does mean a great deal to me. Struggling a bit with the 'snail trails'...knowing she's not there, but feeling like she is, and expecting her to be there at every turn. But it's very early and was all very sudden. Found cleaning and disinfecting everything therapeutic - a way of saying goodbye, but also the anticipation of preparing for a new baby at some later point, when all is settled into place. Bittersweet. Hope everyone is doing ok xox

Re: Rest In Peace, Pebbles
Always the right decision when made from love, and stopping her having to suffer in the future was the kindest gift to give her. Play well little Pebbles xx
