Default Hamster rescues or breeders in Torbay?

I've been searching for a hamster within the Torbay area for perhaps even a month now, however to no avail. The nearest hamsters available, not even for adoption or via breeders, are all the way in Cornwall or Plymouth.
I had agreed to pick up a little guy who lived in an Ovo cage but it all fell through, so that wasn't great as I'd already bought a train ticket to go and get him.

I can't find any rescues and the one breeder in my area seemingly has stopped breeding, with all links being broken & no way to contact.

I wouldn't mind buying one from someone who can't look after them anymore, as I just want to give a hamster a really good life even if it's older or disabled.

What a shame this has happened. I was wondering if you have looked at the pet rehoming websites such as gumtree, pets4homes. I understand if that may not be an option though.

Preloved hamster and freeads are another two sites to check.
What species of hamster are you looking for?

I've tried ultimately everything so far, scouring multiple pages on Google but not finding any advert that is still relative to now, or somewhere that needs multiple trains to get to.

Initially, I was looking for a Syrian, so all my supplies (apart from food, haven't purchased that yet) are tailored for Syrians. I think now, however, I would be okay with any specie of hamster for as long as I am offering it a brilliant home. I have pretty much every single supply, it all just needs to come together now.

I've so far tried:
- preloved
- pets4homes
- pets at home (their adoption system, but there's no hamster for adoption as of the moment)
- freeads (which has had quite a few in the Torbay area, but from what I can see, that was years ago and now seems to of been drying up)
- this Torbay hamster rescue (no response)
- Bluecross (no hamsters in my area)
- gumtree
- trovit
- my local pet store to see if any hamsters have been returned

I've been checking a majority of these places every couple days for the past month, but not finding much. I can't see how anyone in this area even gets hamsters if not supporting rodent mills, which I'm super adamant about not doing.

I saw somebody post on another thread about a company that pick up animals for £60. I think they were called guinea pig teleport. Maybe they could collect a hamster for you.

Hi Heidii,

I’m sorry to hear you’ve still had no luck! I remember a while ago you made a diy cage thread (how did that go in the end?) and you were struggling to find one then.

I might have some good news for you but don’t get your hopes up. There’s this page on Facebook called Happy Hamsters UK and there’s like hotspots for different adoption places in the UK including the South West.

Here’s their website: Adoptions | Happy Hamsters UK

And the list of places they do in South West are:
Gloucestershire
Wiltshire
Berkshire
Somerset
Hampshire
Dorset
Devon
Cornwall

Obviously some are still quite far but ones like Devon are close.

I looked on their Facebook for you and one day ago they posted this:
“ Good afternoon fur fans and welcome to another South West branch update!

We've had an amazing 7 days!!

Adopted this week were
* Freddie - who now lives in a Detolf conversion
* Norman - who now lives in a detolf conversion

Surrendered this week we had
* Muffin - a 7 month old female dwarf
* Mischief - a 14 week old female Syrian

If you would like to offer any of the lovely hamsters in our care a furever home, please drop us a message!

Thank you - the South West team”

It doesn’t say which location, but to be honest sometimes with these adoption sites they sometimes have volunteers they’ll drop the hamster off with so you only have to travel half the distance to pick them up if you show a strong interest.

This is the link to their Facebook page as well: Log into Facebook | Facebook

I’ve not personally collected from them but I have followed them for a while now. They really do care about hamsters and seem to always have some ready for adoption. 5 days ago I think they had two male Syrians in that area so even if this female one is not possible maybe one will come about soon if you keep an eye out.

Best of luck!

I've gone ahead and sent an email to Happy Hamsters. I checked out there current hamsters but from what I can see, most of them are still about a 2 hour £80 train ride. Hopefully something comes up a bit more local

Is your enclosure 100cmx50cm? That's the minimum Happy Hamsters UK will rehome a Syrian into going by their adverts on pets4homes. They state 80cmx50cm for some dwarfs in their ads. I've just checked.

So frustrating because there are always so many hamsters in the small ads where i live in Wiltshire. There's a Syrian on pets4homes in Devizes and two i think in Swindon.

I wonder if a transport chain to get a hamster to you would be a possibility. They arrange that on a German forum to get rescued hamsters to their forever homes.

I'd be more than happy to be part of it. I'm going to check the map now.

My cage will be 120x60cm when it's done, so 1116 square inches of floorspace and I'm open to a dwarf or Syrian. Wouldn't want to house a permanent hamster in anything smaller personally.
