Default Hamsters in London

Hi,

I'm new to the board and looking for some advice. My daughter has been asking for a hamster for over a year (and is currently asking daily!!) and we have decided to get her one for her birthday at the beginning of December (it will be a surprise). She is only going to be 5 so I would have planned for her to be a bit older before getting a pet but I am fully prepared to be the one doing the vast majority of the looking after. I have done loads of research and I'm secretly looking forward to getting one now!!
I have just ordered the cage and will be getting other things shortly. Anyway, I would like to get a hamster that I know will be healthy and as friendly as possible. I have looked for breeders nearby and the closest I can find is over an hr and a half away and I don't think hubby would agree to that. Can anyone recommend anyone closer to us - we are in south east london. Not necessarily a breeder but someone with healthy, well looked after hamsters. I don't really want to go to a pet shop. Oh, we will be getting a syrian btw.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Hannah

Hi,
try emailing Tufty Fluff hamstery, she is based in Borehamwood which is only 20 min on the train from Pancras and you can get a £8.50 off peak tube ticket to cover the fare there and back

Home - Tuftyfluff Hamsters

Hope it helps, drop back in and let us know how you get on

I also recommend Tufty fluff Hamstery.

Sue breeds Syrians & Dwarfs who are tame, healthy & happy hams. I had a Winter White boy who lived 2 years 4 months & Jan who is still with me 2 years 6 months old.

Both were hand tame from the start, with lovely personality's.

Sue is a National Hamster Council registered Exhibitor/breeder which means they are kept in good conditions & are pedigree hamsters.

Thanks very much for the replies. Sounds great but will have a think about that as borehamwood is about 1 1/2 hrs in the car as we're in south east london. If I could drive I'd do it but not sure hubby will feel the same!

Another option maybe to look at a rescue I have rescued from gbh rescue in the past for gerbils who have been happy friendly little things. They often take in pregnant female hams who have been given up because of the unwanted pregnancy. They are then tamed from a very young age as breeder hamster would be (and unlike pet shop hamsters) although you would not be getting a breeders health tuned line that has been improved and improved upon you would be getting a healthy tame hamster. They would be able to match a hamster to you with a good temperament as they are a small rescue who know their animals well. GBH are based in Beckenham, I live in Greenwich in SE London and have traveled there by bus in about an hour so driving wouldn't be to bad at all.

Thanks for this Gamina. I did see gbh and have sent a message on facebook so hopefully will get a reply. Good to know you can recommend it. We're in Catford so Beckenham is just down the road from us. It would be nice to get a rescue hamster - the only reason I was thinking of a breeder is that I thought it may be healthier/live longer. Well, I've emailed both now so will see if I get any replies. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for asking. No reply from Tufty Fluff yet but just had a reply from gbh rescue so that may be the option we go for if I don't get a reply. I do like the idea of getting it from a recommended breeder though and hubby has agreed to the drive!
