Hi everybody
Hello to everybody
Im really looking forward to reading through the forum and picking up lots of tips and advice.
My names Elaine Im in Merseyside, Ive not got a hamster yet but Im trying to find one for my daughter for her birthday which is in a couple of weeks. (not sure who is the more excited me or her ) I think Ive narrowed it down to finding a Dwarf winter white, not easy unless I include pet shops in the search but I shall keep looking
I am a cavy slave to 25 piggers and am chuffed to bits that my daughter wants a hamster, its just the excuse Ive been waiting for to bring one home.
looking forward to getting to know you all
xx

Re: Hi everybody
Hi, welcome (love your username!)
Its great that you are reading up before getting a hammy
How old is your daughter though because the dwarf species are a bit harder to tame and if she is younger a syrian would be a better option

Re: Hi everybody
Hi and welcome - Syrians are bigger and much more handle friendly as Amethyst has mentioned. She must be very excited though about the hamster arriving.

Re: Hi everybody
Welcome to HC, wow lots of piggies, a hamster should fit in nicely
I've found my russian dwarf hybrid (winterwhite x campbells) is the cuddlest of all my hams, much mroe than my syrian, so it really depends on individual temprement.
Pet shop 'winterwhites' are nearly always hybrids, your better off looking for a breeder or going to a hamster show where they will have lots of babies
Good luck in your search x

Re: Hi everybody
Hi Disney, I'm a piggie slave too but only to 4 piggies though I'd love a massive herd.
Good luck in your search for the perfect hamster

Re: Hi everybody
Just wanted to say Thank You for the warm welcome
I will let you know when my quest to find our Hammy is over, not having any luck on the breeder search though, I hate to say but I think its gonna have to be plan B...... the dreaded Pet Shop I think Ill trawl the smaller pet shops within say a ten mile radius and check out if any of them are shall I say a bit more responsible than the larger ones worth a try I suppose.
I personally would much prefer to find a breeder but Ive even tried all my Pigger contacts but there none the wiser than myself. But I wont give up just yet.
I think Ive already made boo boo number one!!
Ive ord one of those ova dwarf cages, when I was looking at the review on on the site Ive ord it from they were great so Iwent ahead and ord it, but delving further into forums Ive found People not that pleased with them
Im wondering if maybe I leave the tubes off it for a while till I can tame him/her and then gradually add a tube and pod here and there, Im also trying to come up with a safe Hammy proof way that I can keep the door open to let more air circulate but without and escaped Ham on my hands Any ideas on that one would be vastly appreciated.
knowing me Ill probobly end up going out and buying another cage until I think the ovo is more suitable to a young Ham, and then you know what will happen Ill have a spare cage and Ill just have to fill it with another Hamster..... well it would be silly to have an empty hamster cage lying around wouldnt it lol
My Daughter will be eight, she is brilliant with animals all all shapes and sizes, she rides has two dogs, a cat and a couple of my piggers are her responsiblity, I trust her completley with the pigs, she is sensible, wise and wants to be a police lady on a horse when she grows up lol she helps with every aspect of the pigs, bathing, grooming, feeding and cleaning out, the only thing I dont let her do is trim there nails, even for me this can be tricky
Anyway Ive gone on long enough only wanted to say thanks for your welcomes and look forward to chatting to you all
ps Ive updated my website link if anybody tried to have a look at it Id done it wrong sorry. I dont use the website much now to be honest I lost interest in the piczo when it all changed, its so hard to master now so its not been updated in ages, but all the pigs on there are still having a happy life with me now.
xx

Re: Hi everybody
habitrail is ok with lots of add ons, but your right about the tubes, although just one pod isn't really suitable (unless maybe you had the habitrail ovo loft)
heres a link to all teh shows this year, i'm no good with geography so i can't picture where you are so whats close to you
Shows and Results 2010 - National Hamster Council
But if you contact the NHC they should be able to give you a number of breeders close to you
