Thats a shame - some hamsters do need a lot of taming over several weeks or months but they do come round eventually. Phoebe doesnt really 'like' being handled but she puts up with it now and would never bite - even when I was taming her she never bit me once. Females are naturally more highly strung and want to be off exploring - males are a bit more laid back and are happier to have cuddles and strokes.
In what way did Scampi not like Poppet? I have heard of males bending the bars of their cage to get to a female!! It usually makes them a bit more excitlable and lively.
Well, lets hope that Bertie gets on a bit better with his room mates and settles in well.
