New hamster owner

Hello,
I've had a couple of hamsters when I was younger. I got them both from a pet store, but they were already easy to handle when I got them. Thursday night I got a new hamster. This is the first one I've had to tame. It's going to be a challenge. He's a black Syrian hamster. Last night was the first night and he didn't wake up until 9:30. I go to bed around 10:30, so that doesn't give me much time. This is going to be a challenge.

If he came from a pet store they don't have the best start or handled much so you usuallyhave to put a bit of work into gaining their confidence. It can be a lovely experience though bonding with your new family member.

As you likely know, hamsters are more active at night and early morning. You can sometimes get them to adjust to your shedules by starting to gently talk to the cage and make soft noise in the room. Never disturb your hamster in their nest though like lifting up lids where they are sleeping.

Not all hamsters adapt to being up earlier though. Some of mine were most active round 2-4am. That suited me fine as Im up late.
