Default How can I open my hamsters eye?

Hi! I’m new here and I’ve just recently got a new hamster. He’s only 8 weeks old. When I went to see him last night to bond and pick him up he was frightened but let me sometimes. However I noticed that his left eye is closed. Instantly I panicked and googled it and I think it’s sticky eye. Does anyone have any advice on how I can go about opening it for him? He won’t just let me pick him up as he’s scared as I’ve only had him for 2 days? I don’t want to leave it too long. This has never happened before so I’m a bit panicky

Can understand feeling panicky. Sticky eye is fairly common in hamsters. The best way to open a sticky eye is using some warm water or a sterile saline solution to wipe the eye to open it. But usually they will open it themselves if it sticky eye. So as he a new hamster I would recommend monitoring it closely if he still not opened his eye then your might need to help. Is his eye fully shut? Or partially?

Just make sure there isn’t any discharge from the eye - anything of a greenish colour could be a sign of infection or cloudiness to the eye could be an indication of an eye ulcer. If you notice this then he will need to see a vet.

This morning when I checked it was almost fully shut but I could see him blinking or attempting to. It’s opened a bit now so I’m hopeful I won’t have to help out !
