Hello from Canada
Hello Im new here, I found my way to this forum through google.
I'm looking at getting into owning a hamster again, the last time i owned one was when i was like 12 or 13 and it was a Syrian I think
I'm thinking of getting a dwarf hamster and wondering if they are better alone or in a pair
I've been looking at cages and seen on here the Savic Hamster Heaven is popular and im wondering how well does it suit a dwarf hamster.
Im also wondering what tubes are compatible with the cage as im thinking of getting a second hand 10 gall tank and putting like 5-6 inches of bedding in it so the hamster has another area to burrow and play in
Any tips or feedback is appreciated
Thanks

Re: Hello from Canada
Hamsters of any species should be kept alone. The risk of fighting is extremely high especially once hormones kick in, and unlike rats for example they aren't naturally social animals nor do they benefit from being housed socially.
The Savic Hamster Heaven is a decent cage but only with tubes and such removed. Tubes very often end up collecting urine and such, so that leads to respiratory health risks since no plastic tube is going to have good enough ventilation even if they have holes in them.
You're a lot better off having deep substrate in the main cage rather than something connected with a tube. You could still have a dig box for playpen use but I would recommend a decently sturdy plastic bin for that. They're generally inexpensive, much lighter than glass, and you also won't have the risk of accidentally breaking them so easily as an added bonus!
