Default Just adopted a hamster - he's never been handled

Any ideas on how to build confidence in a hamster I have just adopted. He is a male syrian called Rudy. Previous owner, I believe, didn't have much time for him. I have put him in a larger cage and he now has a proper wheel. He had one of those tiny saucer runs which I believe aren't good for their backs. He is very shy but slowly building trust and taking food off my hand. Thanks for any advice.

Encouraging new hammies by offering food is an effective way for him to associate you (and your hands) with something positive, so it sounds like you're already making good progress. Cleaning the cage and other regular duties will also help him get used to your presence. When you replace/add bedding, you can rub your (clean) hands on it so he will get used to your scent (their most reliant sense!). You can also try laying your hands flat with the palms up so he can also become physically accustomed to them. If he climbs aboard, you can gradually try lifting him up a couple inches at a time and, if his behavior allows it, he'll be climbing into your hands with ease! Don't try picking him up from above as that is similar to how predators may hunt; it'll probably give him a scare. I hope Rudy ends up being an affectionate little fella!

I also suggest watching stuff from Victoria Raechel's YouTube channel, she's very well-informed and her content is easily accessible. Best of luck!

good for you for adopting a hamster that obviously didnt have the right living conditions! He'll definitely be much happier with you.
the good news is that Syrian hamster are generally very friendly and get used to people more quickly than any other breed. He might take a little bit longer, if he was traumatized in the past and learned not to trust people.
By giving him the right care (big cage, good wheel, good food, lots of enrichment, etc.) he will most likely gradually learn that humans are trustworthy.
I suggest giving him a little while to adjust, and when he gets to the point where he's okay with approaching the cage (or if he's there already), then following the instructions above.
there is always a chance that a hamster just doesn't like being touched and there's nothing to do about it, but since he's a Syrian, I have a feeling he'll get used to you pretty quickly.
good luck!
