Default New from Louisiana

Hi,

I've been keeping Syrian hamsters since age 6. I am a manager at a petstore and in my senior year for a degree in biology. I'd love to have a hamstery of my own one day and produce show quality and calm temperament hamsters. The rodent mills are still producing biters and that's just not okay.

I currently have 3 hamsters. A banded red eyed cream female of a really nice size and conformation, an all black young male and a young black tortoiseshell female.

I've been studying Syrian hamster genetics using online resources and find it complicated, but fascinating. My tort female has cream patches where yellow should be, which I've learned is undesirable and difficult to breed out.

Anyway, I hope to be well received here and become an active member of the online hamster community. Thanks for allowing me to join.

Hi and welcome.
What base colour is your tort? The 'cream ' effect is still yellow it's just probably poorly ticked due to the base colour or an interaction with the base colour which can change the colour of the yellow patches. So dark grey base colour would have smoke pearl yellow patches and cinnamon torts would have honey yellow patches. I find that unless you have a well ticked golden the yellow patches do look creamy.

Hi, thank you for the welcome,

I've been calling her a black tortoiseshell and white, but let me try to post a photo here. I have one I took the day I got her alongside a black eyed cream. I can try to get better photos later today.

Oh, I don't think it will let me post the pic, maybe I can link to it

Well, I've acquired a 4th hamster. I just really liked her coloration and temperament. I think she is a mink. It's hard to tell in the photo, but her eyes are ruby.
