Default Hello! Back after 1 year :)

Hi hamster lovers. My name is Jacki and I'm back here after a little over a year. I was a new hamster owner in 2020 and found a lot of help and comaradery here. Hammy-pie was my Syrian hamster and she was a darling pet. She went to hammy heaven last year. I finally decided to introduce a hamster back into my life. I stopped at the pet store to find a Robovorski hamster, but ended up with two. There were only two in the aquarium, sisters. I just couldn't split them up. I have a very large aquarium, room enough for both. I've had Tater & Tot for about nine days now and decided I better come back to Hamster Central for more knowledge and advice about my two new wee roommates. Greetings to all, and here's to all the hammies who warm our worlds.

Hello and welcome back!
Congratulations to your new little hamster friends.

Please keep a second habitat ready and all set up because hamsters kept in pairs can fall out and fight at any time.
Better to be prepared than sorry. Also watch out for bullying or one growing bigger than the other as stress can lead to illness. Personally, i'd never keep hamsters in pairs but if you feel confident and experienced enough to give it a try then i wish you the best of luck.

Oh no! The pet store worker didn't tell me that! I thought since they were living together since birth it was the best thing to do. I usually only see one of the two. Seen the second only once. This really distresses me. I thought two female litter mates would be better together. Maybe I should take one back. There is a 30 day policy. I would only want both of them happy. The pet store guy said Roborovski hamsters do well together. I am quite upset now. I better dig around and make sure she's okay. But was trying to let them settle in. Good grief!

It's the same here in the UK. Pet shops actively encourage people to buy dwarfs in pairs, sell tiny cages, tiny wheels and hamster balls. In short, they are doing their best to give hamsters an unhappy life.

I sometimes foster and rehome hamsters and currently have a Robo from a "same sex" pair that had babies so he was returned to the pet shop and ended up in the adoption tank. I had a number of dwarfs who had started to fight so one was returned and i had a dwarf with a long scar from where he had been attacked by his cage mate.

If i were in your situation, i'd make a bin cage or buy a second hand cage then house one in there and rehome myself if you don't have the space for two large enclosures.

How big is your aquarium? If it is a very large one then maybe a secure devider could be another option.

I struggle to rehome the hamsters sometimes because i get attached and keep far too many myself but i make 100% sure that their forever home with people who want to adopt them is suitable.

I can't imagine returning one to the pet shop though so don't be surprised if you can't bring yourself to do that.

So sorry to post a reply that distresses you but i thought it necessary to make you aware of what could happen.

Ria, thank you for posting a reply so quickly. It's okay it distressed me, as what you wrote needed to be stated. I just wrote in the Robo forum, thanking those who offered their advice as well. I should have known about the pet store being less-than-truthful or unaware. When I got my Syrian I joined Hamster Central and learned the cage they sold me was entirely too small, as well as the wheel. I went out and got a thirty gallon aquarium and got a lovely, large flying saucer wheel that Hammypie loved. Once again, from advice here I will correct my mistake and put together another home for one of the girls (if they turn out to be girls, I'll likely never know for certain). Thank you for your help and kindness. I will surely be back to read about Robos and other hammies.

Ria, wanted you to know I went ahead and got another 40 gallon tank to split up my two Robos. I measured the first tank and realized it was a 40 gallon, so I felt I needed to be equitable since I decided to keep both of them. It's a relief to know they will be safe now and I don't need to worry anymore. I've ordered a few more things for the second cage, but they are set with the necessities. Although, Tot will be without a wheel until its delivery this weekend. Looking forward to getting to know their personalities. Thanks again for your help in caring for my new hammies.

Now you can relax knowing that your little Robos will be safe and live a happy, stressfree hamster life. They are very lucky to have a human companion who cares about them as much as you do.
