Default Hello :)

Hello and Merry Ham-mas to all
I do not have a hamster currently but am preparing to welcome a new addition in 2022 (Covid dependant). Someone I was emailing with posted a quote from here and I googled it and… here I am!
I have kept hamsters in the past, my favourite being a beautiful short haired cream-type with the most gorgeous black eyes. Unfortunately she lived a very short life as she was a pet shop hamster and, I assume, poorly bred. Before her I swore I would never get a hamster but she stole my heart.
I currently keep two dogs, two children and a mouse who is nearly 2 and from an unculled NMC litter. He is completely fabulous and my daughter has learned a lot from him and how to treat animals. Her favourite thing to do is let him sit on her and feed him dried mealworms.
My other passion is showing rats and I am waiting for some well bred rats to start my hobby up again. I never expect to win anything but I like pampering them just before a show and making them all smart and dandy. If they don’t like it, they stay at home (but still get pampered!).
I am hoping to expand my knowledge on hamsters and learn more about best practices and their care as well as the genetic side of hamster breeding (however I have never had the need to breed my rats and I never plan on breeding hamsters - I just like having the knowledge).
I also ramble on a lot so my apologies!

Hello and welcome to HC!

Please feel free to ramble as much as you like, lol, because you are amongst likeminded people here who love to talk about anything hamster.

I'm not a breeder and never will be but like you, i'm interested in the genetics of hamsters. There's a book available called "Hamster lopaedia" which is an informative reference book. The book is way out of date regarding hamster care, in fact the sections on hamster care are quite appaling but the other sections on physiology, anatomy, illnesses and genetics etc are still relevant and interesting to read.
