Exclamation I need some advice!

Hello all I have a Russian Dwarf hamster named Cheeks that I had for 19 months now. I noticed a lump on his chest between his front legs, and I made a vet appointment as soon as I noticed it. Cheeks had his appointment today and I found out that the lump is cancer. Do to his age the vet didn’t recommend the surgery to remove, she did recommend to drain it a little but said it would fill back up. She prescribed some anti inflammatory medication that I can give him for comfort but that was all she could do. She advised if the lump got bigger and affected his quality of life to consider euthanizing him but she said he wasn’t at that point as of yet. Is there any diet changes that anyone has had success with in helping to prolong their hamster’s life that had cancer ?

I'm sorry to hear that your hamster has cancer.

Your vet makes sense to me and i agree with what she advised.

I lost two dwarfs to cancer. One had surgery and died nine days later because the cancer had already spread and the other was kept comfortable on an anti inflammatory painkiller like the one your hamster has been prescribed. She lived for another four months. I gave her the painkiller daily because it really did help her a lot. I did adjust their diet in the sense that i gave them what they enjoyed most which is probably not the answer you were looking for. I don't think that a certain diet could influence or slow down cancer. It is a nasty illness and my way of thinking was to make the best of whatever time they had left and to spend as much time as possible with them. Time became very precious. If at any point i would have thought that they were suffering, i would have had them euthanised.

My dwarf has a lump on her chest too. The vet wasn't sure whether it's cancerous or not but fortunately it hasn't grown at all since it appeared in May. She's 18 months old now and has a couple of other minor health issues but in general is doing really well. I hope your hamster will stay well for some time yet too.

I haven't changed her diet. I don't know of any specific dietary changes that might help with a tumour or cancer, apart from generally making sure the diet is healthy and balanced.

I wrote something yesterday and lost it As Ria says there isn't really an anti cancer diet or anything that will cure it. Only thing I'd suggest is immune boosting extras to help him keep in good health generally and able to fight things off. Brazil nuts have an ingredient that's a high immune boosting substance so giving half a shelled brazil nut once a week would be a nice extra. Or maybe a quarter twice a week as they're quite big.

Also hemp seeds contain all vitamins and minerals and healthy fats and supposed to be good for immunity. A pinch of those and a pinch of linseeds daily on a separate dish (I use a jar lid). They like them and lick them up. The linseeds make their fur lovely as well. Otherwise just general hamster food. Porridge oats are supposed to soak up free radicals (cancer causing chemicals) and hamsters love a bit of porridge. You can just make a little bit in a mug in the microwave - and give it on a teaspoon when cooled. Daily if it's not too much faff. Just a heaped teaspoon of porridge oats and a bit of water (not milk) in a mug and microwave for 10 to 30 seconds (trial and error).
