Smile New Hampster Mom

Hey all!

I recently got myself a short haired Syrian Hampster (Female). I named her Ziggy! I have always wanted a hampster, but decided to wait until I finally wrote my final college exam to invest in getting a curious little one. She is full of spunk and has a personality like I have never seen before. She is always sniffing, digging trenches in her new home. Instead of getting a barred cage, I went with a 116q clear bin with a lot of holes in the lid. I would highly recommend this for any new hampster parents, as when they decide at the most ungodly hours of the night, to scratch and naw at the cage, you cannot hear a sound, allowing you to still get all the sleep in the world, while they try to disturb you! I have many questions about her behaviour, and am looking forward to hearing your feedback and help, as I begin this journey in being the best momma I can possibly be to my lil Ziggypie.

Hello and welcome to HC!

Congratulations to your new girl Ziggy!

There is a lot of helpful information on this friendly forum and people are always happy to answer any questions you may have.

I used to keep my hamsters in bin cages and have converted many storage boxes into hamster habitats.

Holes in the lid do not give enough ventilation though and lack of ventilation can lead to all sorts of problems including health problems for your hamster and expensive vet bills for you.

I always meshed the lid, a front window and a back vent but it may be easier for you to just mesh the lid which is necessary to keep your hamster healthy.

There are tutorials on youtube.
