Question Received New Mysterious Hamster, So Hi!

Yesterday my sister was given a hamster that my mom’s coworker found roaming around! We don’t know where it came from, what age it is, what kind of hamster it is beyond dwarf, or what sex it is. (We think it’s male, but I wanted verification.) It also is colored in a way I’ve never seen a hamster be colored before, but I was hoping one of you might have answers so I decided to join this forum.

The coworker bought a cage for it as well as food, but she didn’t think she’d be able to care for it well so it is under my sister’s care now. I’ve taken some pictures, so I hope you can enlighten us as to what hamster this is and possibly where it might’ve come from. It doesn’t seem to us like the kind of hamster that would appear in your local pet store, so we thought maybe it could’ve been from a breeder, but we could be wrong.

My sister and I have owned five hamsters between us not counting the new addition, but I would also love any helpful tips and suggestions that could improve the quality of this little hamster’s life as our hamster care knowledge is fairly basic. Thank you! (Pictures attached) (P.S. My sister’s thinking of naming it Hedge, short for hedgehog due to it’s fur colors)

Update: After attempting to do a bit of research, I believe the hamster is a white face roborovski dwarf hamster. I would love if I could get a confirmation, as well as a confirmation of it’s sex, as well as any advice. Thank you! ♡

Hello and welcome to HC!

Your new friend looks like a male Roborovski hamster to me. Robos are the smallest of all hamster species.

Hedge looks a bit thin but that will soon change in your care. Who knows where he came from but he must have been someone's pet.

Robos are sold in petshops here in the UK and people breed them as well.

I love them and have one myself plus a foster one at the moment. Robos can be fast and love their wheels. They need a spacious cage with a burrowing area and sand. They do love their sand bath.

If you have a look on the Forum and scroll down to hamster species, you'll see a section on Roborovski hamsters.

What a great idea to call him Hedge. You're right, with his coat colour (i think his may be agouti) and the little white face, he does resemble a hedgehog.

He's one lucky little hamster.

aww bless him. Yes he is a robo like Ria stated.
He does look rather skinny, I wonder if he was roaming around for a while.
He looks like my robo Comet, which I always forget what colouring he is, agouti something or other

Thank you for the clarity! ^^ I’ve been spending a lot of time researching and browsing these forums for information on food and housing, so I hope we’ll be able to give him a much more comfortable and healthy life. I wasn’t sure about whether or not I should give him a sand dish or something, but I think I’ll have to now haha.

I have plans now to get him a long 20 gallon tank so he doesn’t escape or get stuck in bars and has room to run around, and better food for him. Once I get it all set up, I definitely plan to come back here and post to see if my setup looks good or if I should make changes. After looking into it more, I thought he might be a male roborovski, but we haven’t owned a roborovski before and it’s such a huge relief to see that you agree!

I’m so glad that someone found him so we can give him a longer, healthier, happier, safer life. I can’t help but want to give him the best I can ♡

Thank you again!!

I wonder how long he’s been roaming too, but am glad to see him running on his wheel and sleeping comfortably in his substrate. He’s docile and curious, and uninjured thankfully. I have hope that we can give him a healthy happy life. ^^

P.S. I’ve seen you on these forums while I was researching and ended up checking out your Youtube channel. Comet is adorable and he and your other hamsters are very lucky to have you! ^^ ♡

I’m glad to hear he is starting to settle in. I hope that he starts to gain a bit of weight soon and well done to you and your sister for taking hedge in. He looks very sweet x
