Default Cage Upgrade?

Onyx is currently 8" L she's a Syrian "Teddy Bear" Hamster. She's 2 years old going on 3 currently. She's very active and vocal. She let's me know when she wants attention. She's very sassy in that aspect. Her cage is currently under question because she seems to have grown out it. My question to you all is what type of cage would you recommend? She's still very active. The current cage she's in is 32.5" L x 19" W x 17.5" H with 3/8 wire spacing.

Hello and welcome to HC!

Why do you want to upgrade a hamster who is 2 years old?

There are several reasons.

1. She is double the size she was when I initially put her in the cage.

2. I have repositioned her water dispenser 2 times. Every time she drinks she has to hunch her back and there isn't room to move up anymore.

3. She isn't happy she has become very vocal. That is extremely apparent. Especially when I have to go to bed.

4. She is bigger than the average Syrian hamster.

If you want another barred cage the Savic Plaza, Barney Cage or Borneo XL may be options.

I'd give her a water bowl as well which may be more comfortable for her to drink from. You can get one that attached to the bars or have a look in the bird section of a pet shop.

I'm making her DIY cage. That way she has more room.

Hi. She is very old at two years. One issue can be adjusting the cage so it's safe in case she falls - eg lowering or removing levels. It looks like the Alaska cage is it? If she has been happy in that cage then tweaking it may be better - more toys at floor level and less height and levels so it's safer. Not many hamsters live to the age of 3 - longest ours have lived has been about 2 years 8 months and the last couple of months not well.

If she's still active though and you do think she'd benefit from an upgrade and more floor space then 100cm low height cage would be good. Not easy to find cages at the moment since lockdown.

Personally I'd keep her where she is, add more enrichment at floor level, make sure it's safe. And plenty of out of cage time. Playpen if possible.

Hamsters can get stressed by cage changes. It is possible with an older hamster, if done very carefully - letting her play in the new one a couple of times before moving, moving everything over without cleaning and a similar layout (including all the old bedding on top of new bedding).
