I used to belong to the "Robos are hamsters to watch not handle" brigade until two young ladies who adopted Robos from me sent me photos of their Robos sitting on their hands looking relaxed. They were happy to go along with whatever the Robo felt comfortable with but spent time with them and handled them.

This made me rethink and i started to handle Monty and foster Robos. One foster Robo even sat on my hand.
Monty doesn't look as grumpy now when i hold and do handling exercises with him. He doesn't like the playpen but likes running around in the hall hamster playground.
I've also noticed and so has my OH, that Monty is not hiding away in his cage now. He's about a lot more when we talk and interact with the other hamsters which makes it easier to include him. It's nicer to talk to a hamster than to talk to his cage. Last night he appeared when i called his name which was another first.

Tonight was the first time i managed to scoop Monty up with my hands and take him out of his Hamster Heaven.

I did handling exercises for a little while and he no longer tries to immediately run off which is huge taming progress. Monty seems to enjoy the hall hamster playground and looks relaxed with the ears up while exploring.

He's nodding off sitting under a wheel so i'd better put him back in his home.

I scooped Monty up in my hands and took him out of his cage tonight. For a Robo he is making good taming progress. He sat in the crook of my arm tonight while i stroked him which is not something he's done before so he's definitely getting more used to handling.
I only take him out when he's been out and about anyway or rustle his substrate calling his name. Sometimes he appears and sometimes he doesn't.
After a run around he's ready to go back home.

As he’s adorable. How long before you started with taming?

I had Monty for about 5 months before i started taming because i thought that i couldn't tame a Robo and he was already 9 months old by then.
I started taming about 2.5/3 months ago and he has made a lot of progress which is the reason i didn't give up on it after a month or so.

Thanks. That gives me hope! At the moment I'm torn between wanting to start taming Pip before he becomes too independent in his cage, and not wanting to set him back too soon while he's settling in. So I think I'll wait for him to settle in. He at least doesn't run and hide too much if I put my hand in the cage.

Has Pip been handled before?

I believe so. The person at the rescue said she had him sitting on her hand a couple of times. And was intending to do some more taming with him. But then they had an incident so I'm not sure if that ever happened. Plus I'm a new person so he'll need to adjust to me probably. I'd quite like to get him out of the cage for some taming but think I need to let him adjust to the cage a bit longer. He's only just finding some things in the cage. He loves zooming up and down the ladder and the wheel of course.
