Hello! Looking for advice
Hello all,
I am posing on behalf of my daughter who is looking to get her first hamster. I had hamsters all the way through my childhood but this will be her first pet.
She had the cage, a new wheel and some toys for Christmas and has been reading and watching YouTube video on hamster care ever since. We had hoped to find a hamster in the new year.
Sadly, lockdown has now hit and we can't find one. I'm hoping to find somewhere where they are handled and I'm reluctant to buy from Pets at Home as I haven't heard great things about them in the past (might have changed now so correct me if I'm wrong).
Where would you recommend we look? Can anyone advise us on where best to continue our search?
Thanks

Depending on where you're based, there will be a hamster club you can contact for information on breeders local to you. There's Northern, Midland and Southern and each has their own website with a breeder list on it

You could also contact rescues and look on sites like pets4homes and preloved where people advertise who rescue and rehome hamsters.
In the meantime you could have a look at the thread "Let's see your cages" on the Forum under Housing for ideas on hamster habitat set ups.

I've only used Pets at Home once, for my current hamster, because the place I have hitherto used was unable to source them for a while. I have to say I was very impressed. The member of staff serving me was very knowledgeable, gave Freya a thorough check over before handing her over, and wanted to see a photo of the cage we had ready for her before letting her go.
However, I'm guessing that they might not be displaying pets in store just now as C19 rages on....

It seems to vary from shop to shop. I live near four different petsathome shops and some still sell pets whereas others don't.
Currently, a lot of hobby breeders advertise hamsters for sale on Gumtree. Not something i'd like to support because i think its wrong to breed random hamsters to gain money but on the other hand its not the babies fault that they were born that way and all hamsters deserve a good home regardless of their origin.

Re: Hello! Looking for advice
some of the rescues are unable to adopt out at the moment due to covid but they will probably reserve one for you if you are interested and can wait. Also, some will do a contactless exchange if you are in the local area.
Two main hamster rescues I know of are Austin's hamster haven rescue (south Yorks - normally would travel) and Hamster Haven rescue (cheshire).
If you are on instagram there are a few on there too.

Re: Hello! Looking for advice
Thank you all. We’re based near Nottingham so I have had a look at the midlands Hamster club breeders but several of the nearest ones have very out of date websites. Does anyone know if they are still active but just not updating?

Re: Hello! Looking for advice
I'd contact them anyway if I were you. I'm one of the MHC breeders that is horrendously guilty of not updating their website for quite a while >.<
In my defence, I've been busy at work throughout the pandemic and only had 1 full week off since April so it's kinda dropped down my list of priorities. I know quite of few of the MHC breeders still have litters though so don't give up
