Discolored urine in Syrian
Hi, we noticed that my daughter's hamster's urine is a brownish-red color. Not sure if it has always been this way but since she bought new bedding which is white, it is very obvious. Cheerio is about 14 months old (we think) and he is a very social, active, and happy hamster. We took him to the exotic vet a couple of days ago, which is the only vet in our city that sees hamsters, and they kept him overnight to observe him and check his urine for a UTI. They said he doesn't have a UTI and it might be because of the food he is eating that is making his urine this color. So, last night we decided to fill his bowl with his food and try to pick out anything that might discolor his urine. This morning his urine is still the brownish-red color. Should we be concerned?
Thanks,
Lisa

Re: Discolored urine in Syrian
It can be due to the dyes in food. Even natural dyes like beetroot can colour the urine. It will take a few days for the dyes to leave the system and he will have some in store so I wouldn't judge it too quickly.
I would be cautious about removing bits from the food especially as he is eating it as it might unbalance the diet. If he seems well otherwise and is acting normally this may be a normal colour for his urine and you haven't seen it before due to the bedding colour.
